News: <\/span><\/b>Recently, a new <\/span>green\u00a0hydrogen and green ammonia policy<\/span><\/b> has been introduced that envisages building a prominent role for clean fuels in the country\u2019s fossil fuel-dominated energy mix.\u00a0<\/span> \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What does the policy offer?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

The policy offers some <\/span>concessions on interstate electricity transmission<\/span><\/b> charges, which has the potential to <\/span>halve the current costs of producing green hydrogen<\/span><\/b>. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Other important provisions deal with <\/span>ease of doing business<\/span><\/b>, grid connectivity, and single window clearances. The policy aims to meet the output target of 5 million tonnes of green hydrogen by 2030 from nil now.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What are some issues with the policy?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

The policy is tilted towards the supply side measures and has very little <\/span>to no measures to create demand <\/span><\/b>for the fue<\/span>l.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Policy also has missed focusing on <\/span>electrolysers and fuel cells,<\/span><\/b> which are used in producing and storing green hydrogen. \u00a0Fuel cell systems are used from electric vehicles to large-scale installations providing electricity directly to the grid and can serve as an alternative for batteries.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If these measures are not subsequently incorporated, India may <\/span>end up depending on imports again<\/span><\/b> to meet hydrogen goals.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Why is Hydrogen important for India? <\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

Hydrogen has <\/span>application in refineries, steel-making, power generation<\/span><\/b>, and transport, or to produce synthetic fuels such as methanol, diesel, and jet fuel. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>investment potential in this area is significant<\/span><\/b>. Global sales of hydrogen could be worth $600 billion, and the value chains of green hydrogen could become a $11.7-trillion investment opportunity by 2050.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is the way forward?<\/h5>\n

There is need for both supply and demand side measures<\/strong> as without demand, investments remain too risky for wide-scale production that could reduce costs, and without economies of scale the technology remains too costly<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Therefore, incentives need to be provided<\/strong> for industries to buy green hydrogen, without which private sector participation may be limited<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
