{"id":170714,"date":"2022-02-24T19:04:03","date_gmt":"2022-02-24T13:34:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=170714"},"modified":"2022-02-24T19:04:03","modified_gmt":"2022-02-24T13:34:03","slug":"explained-how-umbilical-cord-blood-was-used-to-cure-an-hiv-patient","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/explained-how-umbilical-cord-blood-was-used-to-cure-an-hiv-patient\/","title":{"rendered":"Explained: How umbilical cord blood was used to cure an HIV patient"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h5><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A US patient has become the third person in the world, and the first woman, to be cured of HIV, the deadly virus that causes AIDS.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What is HIV?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/hiv-aids\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Human immunodeficiency virus or HIV<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an infection that attacks the immune system by destroying the body\u2019s immune cells called CD4, which help it respond to infection.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once HIV attacks the CD4 cells, it starts replicating and destroying the cells, weakening the body\u2019s immune system and making it more prone to certain \u201copportunistic infections\u201d that take advantage of the weak immune system.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>How is HIV transmitted?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bodily fluids such as blood, semen, vaginal fluids, rectal fluids and breastmilk can be carriers for HIV.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can also be transmitted through unprotected sex, transfusion of contaminated blood, sharing needles and syringes, and from a mother with HIV to her infant during pregnancy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>How was the woman cured of HIV?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2013, a woman from the US was diagnosed with HIV. She began to receive antiretroviral drugs to keep her virus levels low.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Four years later, she was diagnosed with leukaemia. As part of her cancer treatment, she received a transplant of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/commercial-cord-blood-banking\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">umbilical cord blood <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from someone who had a natural resistance to HIV. Since then, she has not required antiretroviral therapy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Note:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The earlier two patients who were cured of HIV received transplants from donors who have an uncommon gene that gives them protection against HIV.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>Why is this news significant?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><b>First,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this was the first time an umbilical cord blood transplant was successfully carried out on an HIV patient. Doctors have indicated that this approach is likely to make treatment more widely available.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Second, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the patient was a middle-aged mixed-race woman. This is significant since the majority of donors in the US are of Caucasian descent.
