{"id":170904,"date":"2022-02-25T20:27:56","date_gmt":"2022-02-25T14:57:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=170904"},"modified":"2022-02-25T20:27:56","modified_gmt":"2022-02-25T14:57:56","slug":"world-economic-forum-and-the-national-institute-of-urban-affairs-sign-a-mou-to-collaborate-on-a-jointly-designed-sustainable-cities-india-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/world-economic-forum-and-the-national-institute-of-urban-affairs-sign-a-mou-to-collaborate-on-a-jointly-designed-sustainable-cities-india-program\/","title":{"rendered":"World Economic Forum and the National Institute of Urban Affairs sign a MoU to collaborate on a jointly designed \u2018Sustainable Cities India program\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h5><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The World Economic Forum(WF) and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/itcn-training-programme-launched\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on a jointly designed \u2018Sustainable Cities India program\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What is the Sustainable Cities India program?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Aim: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To enable cities to decarbonize in a systematic and sustainable way that will reduce emissions and deliver resilient and equitable urban ecosystems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>How will the NIUA and WEF collaborate for this Sustainable Cities India program?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WEF and NIUA will adapt the WEF\u2019s <\/span><b>City Sprint process and Toolbox of Solutions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for decarbonization in the context of five to seven Indian cities across two years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>City Sprint process<\/b>: It <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a series of multi-sectoral, multi-stakeholder workshops involving business, government, and civil society leaders to enable decarbonization, especially through clean electrification and circularity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Toolbox of Solutions: <\/b>This sprint process uses the <\/span>Toolbox of Solutions. It is<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0a digital platform containing over 200 examples of clean electrification, efficiency and smart infrastructure best practices and case studies across buildings, energy systems and mobility from over 110 cities around the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The outcome of the workshop series will be a shortlist of relevant policies and business models, which not only reduce emissions but also maximize System Value such as improved air quality or job creation. These shortlisted models will also be included in <\/span><b>Toolbox of Solutions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to showcase to the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What is the significance of the Sustainable Cities India program?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><b>Firstly, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as per the World Economic Forum\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/reports\/global-risks-report-2022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Global Risks Report 2022<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, densely populated countries that are highly dependent on agriculture, such as India, are especially vulnerable to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">climate insecurity. Hence, decarbonization in cities is a real opportunity to keep global warming well below 2 \u00b0C and cities in India can make an enormous contribution in reaching this goal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Secondly,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this initiative is particularly noteworthy as it comes after the Prime Minister of India stated India\u2019s commitment to turn net-zero by 2070 as a climate mitigation response at COP26.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>Net Zero Carbon Cities Mission<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><strong>Launched by<\/strong>: <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Economic Forum<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Aim<\/strong>: To create an enabling environment for clean electrification and circularity, resulting in urban decarbonization and resilience.
