Saltwater Crocodile (<\/span>Crocodylus porosus<\/span><\/i>) which was once used to be found in Vietnam and southern China has become extinct in these areas due to human activity.<\/span><\/p>\n

What is a Saltwater Crocodile?<\/b><\/h5>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Saltwater Crocodile is the largest of the 23 species of \u2018extant\u2019 or living crocodilians. This includes \u2018true crocodiles\u2019, alligators and caimans.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is also called the \u2018estuarine crocodile\u2019 as it is typically found in the brackish water of estuaries.<\/p>\n

It can also tolerate saltwater in the oceans and can travel long distances over the open ocean, making use of tidal currents.<\/p>\n

IUCN Red List:<\/b> Least Concern<\/span><\/p>\n

CITES:<\/b> Appendix I (except the populations of Australia, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea, which are included in Appendix II).<\/span><\/p>\n

Wildlife Protection Act, 1972:<\/b> Schedule I<\/span><\/p>\n

Habitat:\u00a0<\/b>Saltwater Crocodile is found in Bangladesh, Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Australia and the Solomon Islands.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is also one of the three crocodiles native to the Indian Subcontinent, along with the mugger crocodile (<\/a><\/span>Crocodylus palustris<\/span><\/i><\/a>)<\/a> and the gharial (<\/a><\/span>Gavialis gangeticus<\/span><\/i><\/a>)<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

In India, it is found in three locations\u2014 the Sundarbans, Bhitarkanika National Park and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.<\/span><\/p>\n

Threats: <\/strong>Illegal hunting, habitat loss, fishing activities, use of crocodile parts for medicinal purposes and <\/span>antipathy toward the species because of its reputation as a man-eater.<\/span><\/p>\n
