News: <\/span><\/b>IPCC (Intergovernmental panel on climate change) has released its 6th<\/sup> assessment report, titled \u2018Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability\u2019.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In its report, IPCC discusses the increasing extreme heat, rising oceans, melting glaciers, falling agricultural productivity, resultant food shortages and increase in diseases like dengue and <\/span>Zika.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What the IPCC\u2019s 6th<\/sup> assessment report says about climate change?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

IPCC warns that if the planet gets warmer than 1.5 degrees Celsius from pre-industrial times (we are at 1.1 degrees at present)<\/em>, then there will be irreversible impact on \u201cecosystems with low resilience\u201d such as polar, mountain and coastal ecosystems.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This will cause devastation to \u201cinfrastructure in low-lying coastal settlements, associated livelihoods and even erosion of cultural and spiritual values.\u201d <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The increased heat will lead to an increase in diseases like diabetes, circulatory and respiratory conditions, as well as mental health challenges.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What are its India specific findings?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

Impact on India<\/strong><\/p>\n

–<\/strong> IPCC also highlights that climate \u201cmaladaptation\u201d will especially affect \u201cmarginalised and vulnerable groups adversely, indigenous people, ethnic minorities, low-income households and informal settlements<\/span>. As a majority of Indian population falls into this group, it will be hugely impacted<\/strong>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/strong> IPCC highlights India as a vulnerable hotspot<\/strong>, with several regions and cities facing climate change phenomena like flooding, sea-level rise and heatwaves. For instance<\/strong>, Mumbai is at high risk of sea-level rise and flooding, and Ahmedabad faces the danger of heat waves<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/strong> With increasing climate change, grains will have diminished nutritional quality<\/strong>. Already the by 4-10% globally due to climate change. India being a predominantly agrarian economy is likely to be especially hurt.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/strong> Population in urban India is going to double 2050 from current figure of 480 million in 2020. <\/span>High concentration of population<\/strong> in these cities will make them extremely vulnerable<\/strong> to climate change.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
