These are the flat topped mounds that border the Kashmir Valley on all sides.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>How are Karewas formed?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><b><i>Karewas<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were formed during the Pleistocene Period (1 million years ago) when the entire Valley of Kashmir was underwater.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Due to the rise of Pir Panjal, the drainage was impounded and a lake of about 5000 sq. km area was developed and thus a basin was formed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Subsequently, the lake was drained through Bramulla gorge. The deposits left in the process are known as <\/span><b><i>karewas<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What is the significance of Karewas?<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Karewas are 13,000-18,000 metre-thick deposits of alluvial soil and sediments like sandstone and mudstone.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This makes them ideal for the cultivation of saffron, almonds, apples and several other cash crops.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/kovilpatti-kadalai-mittai-and-kashmir-sa%EF%AC%80%C2%81ron-gets-gi-tag\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kashmir saffron<\/a>, which received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2020 for its longer and thicker stigmas, deep-red colour, high aroma and bitter flavour, is grown on these <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">karewas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, despite its agricultural and archaeological importance, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">karewas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are now being excavated to be used in construction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Between 1995 and 2005, massive portions of karewas were razed to the ground for clay for the Qazigund-Baramulla rail line.
