Geological Survey of India(GSI) has celebrated its 172<\/span>nd<\/span> Foundation Day.<\/span><\/p>\n The Geological Survey of India (GSI) was set up in 1851. Currently, it is an attached office to the Ministry of Mines<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n Purpose<\/b>: It was primarily set up to find coal deposits for the Railways. Over the years, GSI has grown into a repository of geo-science information required in various fields in the country.<\/span><\/p>\n Functions: <\/b>To create and update national geoscientific information and mineral resource assessment. These functions are achieved through ground surveys, air-borne and marine surveys, mineral prospecting,\u00a0 seismotectonic study and carrying out fundamental research.<\/span><\/p>\n Significance:<\/b> It is the second-oldest survey organization in India, after Survey of India (founded in 1767).<\/span><\/p>\n Headquarters<\/b>: GSI is headquartered in Kolkata.
