According to a recent analysis from the\u00a0<\/span>International Energy Agency\u00a0(IEA) India\u2019s coal based electricity generation has increased in 2021 than the previous year. This is going to increase further in future and will lead delay India\u2019s efforts to reach its climate goals.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Findings of the report<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

India\u2019s carbon dioxide (CO<\/span>2<\/span><\/sub>) emissions in 2021 reached 80 megatonnes (Mt) above pre-pandemic levels in 2019<\/span>. This could be due to a slowdown in the renewable energy sector.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Commodity prices are on a high. This has increased the cost of producing solar photovoltaic modules, wind turbines and biofuels<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Is the global pattern also same as that observed in India?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

Developing countries<\/strong>: China\u2019s CO2<\/sub> emissions increased 750 Mt between 2019 and 2021.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The United States and many European\u00a0countries switched to coal from gas, adding roughly 250 Mt of CO2<\/sub> in 2021. However, advanced countries kept their CO2<\/sub> emissions under check even as their battered economies returned to the pre-pandemic state.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Why is the trend different in advanced economies?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

Across advanced economies overall, structural changes such as increased uptake of renewables, electrification and energy efficiency improvements avoided an additional 100 Mt of CO2<\/sub> emissions in 2021<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Although <\/span>per capita emissions of advanced\u00a0countries were higher.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
