{"id":174137,"date":"2022-03-14T20:26:52","date_gmt":"2022-03-14T14:56:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=174137"},"modified":"2022-03-14T20:26:52","modified_gmt":"2022-03-14T14:56:52","slug":"union-minister-reviews-gallium-nitride-technology-center-geeci-bengaluru","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/union-minister-reviews-gallium-nitride-technology-center-geeci-bengaluru\/","title":{"rendered":"Union Minister reviews Gallium Nitride Technology center &#8211; GEECI, Bengaluru"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h5><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Union Minister of Electronics &amp; Information Technology has visited the Gallium Nitride Ecosystem Enabling Centre and Incubator(GEECI) facility at the prestigious Indian Institute of Sciences (IISc), Bengaluru.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What is Gallium Nitride Ecosystem Enabling Centre and Incubator(GEECI)?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GEECI has been jointly set up by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and IISc Bengaluru.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Aim: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To establish <\/span><b>Gallium Nitride(GaN)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> based Development Line Foundry facility, especially for Radio Frequency and power applications, including strategic applications.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What is Gallium Nitride(GaN)?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-174138 \" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Figure1_Structure_of_Gallium_Nitride_and_main_features_of_Gallium_Nitride_semiconductors.jpg?resize=581%2C279&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"581\" height=\"279\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Figure1_Structure_of_Gallium_Nitride_and_main_features_of_Gallium_Nitride_semiconductors.jpg?w=1000&amp;ssl=1 1000w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Figure1_Structure_of_Gallium_Nitride_and_main_features_of_Gallium_Nitride_semiconductors.jpg?resize=300%2C144&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Figure1_Structure_of_Gallium_Nitride_and_main_features_of_Gallium_Nitride_semiconductors.jpg?resize=768%2C369&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 581px) 100vw, 581px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gallium nitride(GaN) is a very hard, mechanically stable wide bandgap semiconductor. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The compound is a very hard material that has a Wurtzite crystal structure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Properties of Gallium Nitride<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: High heat capacity, Sensitivity to ionizing radiation is low, faster-switching speed, higher thermal conductivity and lower on-resistance.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>Applications of Gallium Nitride<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><b>LEDs and lasers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GaN-based violet laser diodes are used to read Blu-ray Discs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Transistors and Power ICs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GaN transistors are suitable for high frequency, high voltage, high temperature and high-efficiency applications.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Space and Strategic Applications<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u200b\u200b<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its sensitivity to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ionizing radiation<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is low, making it a suitable material for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">solar cell<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> arrays for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">satellites<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Military and space applications could also benefit, as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">devices have shown stability in radiation environments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Nanoscale<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: GaN nanotubes and nanowires are proposed for applications in nanoscale electronics, optoelectronics and biochemical-sensing applications.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>5G Devices<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Due to high power density and voltage breakdown limits, GaN is emerging as a promising candidate for 5G cellular base station applications.
