In 2021 large blazes in Simlipal Tiger Reserve in Odisha and Uttarakhand destroyed ecosystems of species from the microscopic to the magnificent level.<\/p>\n<p>Several factors which are responsible for forest fires are mentioned below:<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Determinants of forest fires in Indian forests:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Anthropogenic causes\u00a0<\/strong>like smoking, campfires, fireworks on festivals, residues uncleaned by tourist may increase of wildfires in Indian Forests.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Natural Causes<\/strong>\u00a0such as\u00a0<strong>lightning, deficient rainfall, increased temperatures<\/strong>\u00a0primarily because of climate change offer favourable circumstance for a fire to start. For eg: The massive fires of the Amazon forests in Brazil and in Australia in the last two years due to climate change<\/li>\n<li>Duration of dry spells like\u00a0<strong>logs, dead leaves, stumps, dry grass and weeds<\/strong>\u00a0can intensify the forest fires.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>Role of tribal and local communities in dealing with forest fires:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tribal people continue to be guardians of these forests along with the Forest Department. They play a critical role in dealing with forest fires.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Tribal and local communities collect the dry leaves, clean the bushes and create fire lines which help in fire management<strong>. However<\/strong>, collection of mahua flowers and kendu leaves by light fires also induces forest fires<\/li>\n<li>Communities follow\u00a0<strong>forestry management practices<\/strong>\u00a0integrating with their\u00a0<strong>intangible ancestral knowledge\u00a0<\/strong>to deal with forest fires.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>However, there are certain issues as well in involving tribal and local communities:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>But\u00a0<\/strong>the practice of shifting cultivation and grazing in forest areas are also some of the reasons for forest fires.<\/li>\n<li>T<strong>ribal communities<\/strong>\u00a0better control the forest fires in the first place.\u00a0<strong>However<\/strong>, empowering them with forest rights shifts the balance of power and communities start to get a sense of ownership of the forest<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Conclusion:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Forests continue to be\u00a0<strong>central to our civilization<\/strong>\u00a0by shaping our air and rivers.
