{"id":175487,"date":"2022-03-23T20:33:23","date_gmt":"2022-03-23T15:03:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=175487"},"modified":"2022-03-23T20:33:23","modified_gmt":"2022-03-23T15:03:23","slug":"explained-what-is-finlandization-discussed-as-a-possible-option-for-ukraine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/explained-what-is-finlandization-discussed-as-a-possible-option-for-ukraine\/","title":{"rendered":"Explained: What is \u2018Finlandization\u2019, discussed as a possible option for Ukraine?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h5><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The French President has suggested Finlandization might be a realistic outcome for Ukraine if and when the Russia-Ukraine war ends.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What is Finlandization?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-175489\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/B_0c6adimage_story.jpg?resize=300%2C170&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"170\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/B_0c6adimage_story.jpg?resize=300%2C170&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/B_0c6adimage_story.jpg?w=644&amp;ssl=1 644w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finlandization refers to the policy of strict neutrality between Moscow (Russia) and the West that Finland followed during the decades of the Cold War.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The principle of neutrality was rooted in the Agreement of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance that Finland signed with the USSR in 1948.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What was the Agreement of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agreement of Friendship, Cooperation, and Mutual Assistance of 1948 also known as the YYA Treaty was the basis for Finland\u2013Soviet relations from 1948 to 1992.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was the main instrument in implementing the Finnish policy called <strong>Paasikivi\u2013Kekkonen doctrine<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under the treaty, the Soviets sought to deter Western powers from attacking the Soviet Union through Finnish territory and the Finns sought to increase Finland&#8217;s political independence from the Soviet Union.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The treaty obligated Finland to resist armed attacks by <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Germany or its allies&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (in reality interpreted as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the United States and allies<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">against Finland or against the Soviet Union through Finland. If necessary, Finland was to ask for Soviet military aid to do so.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The agreement also <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allowed Finland to pursue the path of democracy and capitalism while staying out of the conflict between the great powers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In return, Finland did not participate in the Marshall Plan. It took neutral positions on matters on which the Soviet Union and\u00a0 West disagreed. It stayed aloof from NATO and used this positioning to ward off pressure from Russia to become part of the Soviet bloc or the Warsaw Pact.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The treaty came to an end in 1992 with the signing of a new treaty between Finland and post-Soviet Russia.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>Ukraine and Finlandization<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Henry Kissinger, US Secretary of State from 1973 to 1977 had given some suggestions to settle Ukraine Crisis. These suggestions are:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ukraine should have the right to freely choose its economic and political associations, including with Europe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 Ukraine should not join NATO. It should be free to create a government compatible with the expressed will of its people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 Ukraine should pursue a posture comparable to that of Finland.
