News: <\/span><\/b>Microsoft has partnered with Fortum, Finnish energy company to launch the world\u2019s largest scheme to provide heat to homes, services and business in Finland with waste heat.<\/span><\/p>\n Heat would be sourced from a new data centre region that Microsoft has planned to build in the Helsinki metropolitan area in Finland.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n First, excess heat generated by the data centre is captured. <\/span><\/p>\n It is transferred from the <\/span>server cooling process<\/span><\/b> to the<\/span> district heating system<\/span><\/b> which is a centralised location that captures heat.<\/span><\/p>\n The heat is then distributed from the district heating system to buildings for residential and commercial heating needs.\u202f <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n A data centre is an organization\u2019s <\/span>physical facility<\/span><\/b> located in a <\/span>dedicated building<\/span><\/b>.\u202fIt comprises computers servers, storage systems, etc. which are used to store the data, critical applications and data etc.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n These <\/span>data centres consume large amounts of energy<\/span><\/b>. Therefore, these physical facilities have temperature controls and energy efficiency systems.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Around 75% of the electricity that is consumed by a data centre becomes <\/span>waste heat<\/span><\/b>.\u202f<\/span><\/p>\n Therefore, a data centre can be used to heat up to 85 degrees Fahrenheit in the winter season, similar to a gas boiler.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n On a global level, data centres consume more than 1% of the world\u2019s total electricity<\/strong>. Therefore, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA), they contribute to 0.3%<\/strong> of all global CO2<\/sub> emissions.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n As per\u202fIreland\u2019s energy regulator, the data centres located in Ireland could use almost 30% of the country\u2019s electricity by 2027. Therefore, they are going to endanger the climate goals.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n It can provide clean heat or climate friendly waste heat to homes, businesses and public buildings in the cities, for example Microsoft aims to provide it in the Helsinki.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n It can help the countries and cities reach their <\/span>CO2<\/sub> emission reduction targets<\/span><\/b>. For example, it can reduce dependence on the coal-fired heat unit in the cities.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Datacentres thrive in cold climates.
