The Western world has imposed unprecedented sanctions against Russia and banned energy imports.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n These sanctions can have an impact on global finance, energy supplies, and transportation<\/strong>, amid growing signs that they will constrain India\u2019s ability to import Russian oil.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru advocated for India\u2019s neutrality<\/strong> in the bloc politics. It was the basis for India\u2019s pursuit of an independent post-colonial foreign policy.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Since the end of the Cold War, India has been advocating the policy of strategic autonomy.<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n –<\/strong> It is a re-branded form of India\u2019s non-aligned posture during the Cold War. It refers to the doctrine of \u2018multi-alignment<\/strong>\u2019 which is a reality of the 21st century. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Therefore, India expanded its engagement with all the major powers.<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n –<\/strong> For example, following the Soviet collapse, India joined Russia and China to promote a multi-polar world (against the unipolarity of the U.S.).<\/em> Later, Brazil and South Africa were also brought into this coalition. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n India has not directly criticised Moscow\u2019s actions. It has abstained from voting at the UNSC. <\/span><\/p>\n Kremlin has praised India for taking an \u201cindependent and balanced\u201d position.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The following factors are causing India a strategic headache and have come to restrain India\u2019s strategic autonomy: <\/span><\/p>\n –<\/strong> At present, India is <\/span>heavily dependent<\/span><\/b> on Russia for its <\/span>arms imports.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n –<\/strong> Also, it has supported India during the Cold War era, like voting against pro-Pakistani diplomatic activism by powerful Western countries in the UNSC. <\/span><\/p>\n –<\/strong> China is blatantly expanding its sphere of influence in the military, economic and political domains through the Belt and Road Initiative in the Indo-Pacific Region (IPR).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Moscow has drifted much closer to Beijing.<\/strong> The present may push Russia further into China\u2019s military and economic orbit.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n –<\/strong> The U.S. is most likely to bolster India\u2019s future as a great power. It also counters China, which is asserting itself in India\u2019s backyard. But Moscow is also sharply critical of India\u2019s engagement with the U.S. and the Quad.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n –<\/strong> The US cannot ignore <\/span>Russia\u2019s aggression<\/span><\/b> along NATO\u2019s periphery. Therefore, The US may find it difficult to digest India\u2019s stand on Russian Invasion.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Way Forward<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n The Russia- Ukraine Conflict implies that Russia is unpredictable now<\/strong>. For example, it is acting as a nuclear-armed bully. It is swinging wildly from one crisis to another. Therefore, it is too risky for India<\/strong> to pursue vague aims vis-\u00e0-vis Russia in these uncertain times.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Russia should rethink its concern against the eastward expansion of NATO. It is because a NATO-Russia Council was formed specifically to alleviate Russia\u2019s concerns.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The Ukrainian tragedy has introduced a new era in international relations<\/strong>.
