UNESCO on behalf of UN-Water has released the United Nations <\/span>World Water Development Report 2022 <\/b>titled \u201cGroundwater: Making the invisible visible\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Importance of Groundwater: <\/b>Groundwater accounts for 99% of liquid freshwater on Earth and is the source of one-quarter of all the water used by humans.<\/span><\/p>\n Water Scarcity: <\/b>An estimated four billion people live in areas that suffer from severe physical water scarcity for at least one month per year.<\/span><\/p>\n Largest Groundwater User:<\/b> India is the largest groundwater user globally, followed by China and Pakistan.<\/span><\/p>\n Sector-wise Groundwater use:<\/b> India uses 89% of the total groundwater abstracted per year for agriculture \u2014 also the highest in the world.<\/span><\/p>\n \u2013 Globally, 69% of the total volume is abstracted for use in the agricultural sector, 22% for domestic uses and 9% for industrial purposes.<\/span><\/p>\n Crops contributing to Groundwater Depletion:<\/b> Wheat, maize, rice, sugarcane, cotton and fodder are the principal crops contributing to groundwater depletion. These crops are heavily traded, indicating highly unsustainable water footprints from intensive export. <\/span>China, India, Iran, Pakistan and the US account for about 70% of the unsustainable water footprint.<\/span><\/p>\n To unlock groundwater\u2019s full potential, the report has given the following recommendations:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u2013 Collecting groundwater data as groundwater monitoring is often a \u2018neglected area\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n \u2013 Strengthening environmental regulations for groundwater pollution.<\/span><\/p>\n \u2013 Reinforcing human, material and financial resources by way of increasing groundwater professionals among the staff of institutions as well as local and national governments.<\/span><\/p>\n \u2013 Financing and supporting groundwater departments\/agencies.<\/span><\/p>\n Source: <\/b>This post is based on the article<\/span> \u201cUnlocking potential of groundwater can provide water security, boost economy: UN\u201d <\/b>published in <\/span>Down To Earth <\/b>on 26th March 2022.<\/b><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" What is the News?
