NITI Aayog has released the Export Preparedness Index (EPI) 2021.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is the Export<\/b> Preparedness Index (EPI) 2021?<\/b><\/h5>\n

Released by:<\/b> NITI Aayog in partnership with the Institute of Competitiveness<\/span><\/p>\n

Aim: <\/b>To examine export readiness and export performance of the Indian States and Union Territories.<\/span><\/p>\n

Objective<\/b>: To instil<\/span> competition among all Indian states to bring about <\/span>a)<\/b> favourable export-promotion policies, <\/span>b)<\/b> ease the regulatory framework to prompt subnational export promotion,<\/span> c)<\/b> create the necessary infrastructure for exports and <\/span>d)<\/b> assist in identifying strategic recommendations for improving export competitiveness.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Parameters:<\/b> The index ranks<\/span> states and UTs on 4 main pillars and 11 sub-pillars.The four pillars include-<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 <\/span>Policy- <\/b>A comprehensive trade policy provides a strategic direction for exports and imports.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 <\/span>Business Ecosystem-<\/b> It examines the business ecosystem, as an efficient business ecosystem can help attract investments and create an enabling infrastructure for businesses to grow.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Export Ecosystem- <\/b>It aims to assess the business environment, specific to exports.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Export Performance-<\/b> It examines the reach of export footprints of states and union territories.<\/span><\/p>\n

Significance of the index:<\/b> The index can be used by states and union territories (UTs) to benchmark their performance against their peers and analyze potential challenges to develop better policy mechanisms to foster export-led growth at the subnational level<\/span><\/p>\n

What are the key Rankings of the index?<\/b><\/h5>\n

States: <\/b>Gujarat has retained the top position in the index, followed by Maharashtra and Karnataka.<\/span><\/p>\n

Union Territories: <\/b>Delhi has topped the index, followed by Goa.<\/span><\/p>\n

The index has found that most of the \u2018Coastal States\u2019<\/b> are the best performers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The top-six states in India \u2014<\/b>Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Telangana \u2014contribute 75% of India\u2019s overall exports.<\/span><\/p>\n

What are the challenges in export promotion?<\/b><\/h5>\n

The index brings out three major challenges to India\u2019s export promotion. These are: <\/span>1) <\/b>Intra- and inter-regional differences in export infrastructure,<\/span> 2) <\/b>Weak trade support and growth orientation across states and <\/span>3) <\/b>Lack of R&D infrastructure to promote complex and unique exports.<\/span><\/p>\n
