{"id":176335,"date":"2022-03-28T19:19:31","date_gmt":"2022-03-28T13:49:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=176335"},"modified":"2022-03-28T19:19:31","modified_gmt":"2022-03-28T13:49:31","slug":"indias-space-economy-valued-at-%e2%82%b936794-crore","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/indias-space-economy-valued-at-%e2%82%b936794-crore\/","title":{"rendered":"India\u2019s \u2018space economy\u2019 valued at \u20b936,794 crore"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h5>What is the News?<\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Centre for Development Studies(CDS) and the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST) has released a paper titled \u201cThe space economy of India: its size and structure\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5>About the paper on the Space Economy of India<\/h5>\n<p><b>Purpose<\/b>: <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The paper is a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">first-of-its-kind attempt at measuring the size of India\u2019s space economy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This paper relied on the data from the Indian Space Research Organisation(ISRO), Parliament documents, Comptroller and Auditor-General\u2019s(CAG) reports, data on intellectual property rights and other government data.<\/span><\/p>\n<h6><b>Key highlights from the paper related to the Space Economy of India<\/b><\/h6>\n<p><b>Size of India\u2019s Space Economy:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is estimated at \u20b936,794 crores (approximately $5 billion) for the financial year 2020-21.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Estimated space size as a percentage of the GDP: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This has slipped from 0.26% in 2011-12 to 0.19% in 2020-21.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Space Sectors: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among the space constituents, space applications accounted for the major chunk of the annual budget in 2020-21, followed by space operations and manufacturing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Space budget as a percentage of the GDP: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has slipped from 0.09% in 2000-01 to 0.05% in 2011-12 and has remained more or less at that level since then.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>India\u2019s Space Spending compared to other countries: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In relation to GDP, India\u2019s space spending is more than that of China, Germany, Italy and Japan but less than that of the U.S. and Russia.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What is the significance of this paper?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This paper has been released at a time when the Central government policies are opening up the sector to private players.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These policies are very likely to enlarge the size of the sector through enhanced private investment and improved integration with the global private space industry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This post is based on an article<\/span><b> \u201c<\/b><b>India\u2019s \u2018space economy\u2019 valued at \u20b936,794 crore<\/b><b>\u201d <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published in<\/span><b> The Hindu <\/b>on <b>27th March 2022.<\/b><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is the News?
