News:<\/span><\/b> NALSAR University of Law in Hyderabad released a <\/span>draft Policy on Inclusive Education for Gender and Sexual Minorities<\/span><\/b>. <\/span><\/p>\n

The University will allow one of the floors in a hostel to be a gender-neutral space for students who self-identify as LGBTQI+. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2018, the Tata Institute of Social Sciences had established a gender-neutral space in its girls\u2019 hostel. In addition, the Ashoka University inaugurated gender-neutral washrooms in its premises.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Background<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

The Supreme Court judgment in the NALSA v Union of India Case (2014)<\/strong> <\/em>recognised transgender people as the \u201cthird gender\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Consequently, the University Grants Commission (UGC) issued a circular in 2015 to the vice-chancellors of all universities that \u201cTransgender -friendly infrastructure like washrooms, restrooms etc\u201d be built.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It will ensure that students get \u201creasonable accommodation in alignment with their preferred gender identity\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This move can lead to changes that will create inclusive, safe public spaces<\/strong> for gender and sexual minorities.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The move shows the importance of participatory approach<\/strong> in place of the top-bottom approach. For example, it was the active engagement with the student community at NALSAR University that led to this draft Policy.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
