But this should be done in a way that doesn\u2019t strengthen its leader\u2019s power.<\/p>\n<h5>How bad is the situation in Sri Lanka?<\/h5>\n<p><strong>&#8211;<\/strong> Queues at fuel stations have lengthened as supplies run dry<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211;<\/strong> Long power cuts have become the norm<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211;<\/strong> Essential commodities are scarce<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211;<\/strong> A food shortage has grown acute.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211;<\/strong> Lack of foreign exchange<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211;<\/strong> Currency has lost value and retail inflation has soared<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211;<\/strong> Popular discontent against the Rajapaksa government has spilled onto the streets in the form of protests<\/p>\n<h5>How can India help?<\/h5>\n<p>To prevent instability, New Delhi can extend low-cost help to alleviate the hardships of Sri Lankans. But this must be done with due care.<\/p>\n<h5>What are the factors behind Sri Lanka&#8217;s crisis?<\/h5>\n<p>Easter Sunday terror attacks of 2019 followed by covid closures hampered Sri Lanka\u2019s tourism<\/p>\n<p>Even pre-pandemic, it had such l<strong>oose fiscal and monetary policies<\/strong> that economists warned prices would rise, slow commerce down and compress tax collections.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Barring of imports<\/strong>: In 2020, it had blocked inward vehicle shipments. Last year, it barred chemical fertilizers in a misguided push for organic farming that hurt its farm output (and had to be reversed).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reduced credit ratings<\/strong>: With some $6 billion in foreign payments due this year, its credit ratings have also been slashed.<\/p>\n<h5>What is the way forward?<\/h5>\n<p>It is in India&#8217;s interest to contain Chinese presence and influence in Sri Lankan archipelago region.<\/p>\n<p>Sri Lanka\u2019s poor record on minority rights under the Rajapaksa clan has been under watch.
