China is a major import source of Lithium.<\/p>\n<h5>Why is Lithium important for India?<\/h5>\n<p>It is a <strong>key component\u200aof lithium-ion\u200abatteries<\/strong>, the demand for which has surged amid\u200athe Centre\u2019s push to boost\u200athe adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) in the country.<\/p>\n<p><strong>PLI Scheme<\/strong>: The <span class=\"webrupee\">\u20b9<\/span>18,000 crore production-linked incentive scheme for advanced chemistry cell (ACC) battery storage, has kicked off and the supply of lithium, which is largely an imported product, has\u200adeclined.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dependency on China<\/strong>: With India being in a diplomatic tussle with China, the supplies from the neighbouring country have declined and India too is looking for other import avenues.<\/p>\n<h5>Why the supply of Lithium has declined?<\/h5>\n<p><strong>Demand-supply mismatch<\/strong>: The supply of lithium has not kept pace with the rise in demand from electric vehicle makers across the world.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211;<\/strong> China is witnessing a mismatch between demand and supply, which has led to a rise in prices.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Who are major Lithium producers and does India produce lithium?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><strong>Australia <\/strong>was the largest lithium producer in 2021, according to US Geological Survey, with an estimated output of 55,000 metric tonnes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chile and China<\/strong> ranked second and third.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>India<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211;<\/strong> India is <strong>dependent on imports<\/strong> for lithium, as production in the country is minimal.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211;<\/strong> The first traces of the lithium have been found in <strong>Karnataka\u2019s Mandya district<\/strong>, a mere 100 kilometres from Bengaluru.
