This visit holds significance\u00a0since it is the first visit of Nepal\u2019s PM to India since 2018, and is also the first bilateral visit of the new PM of Nepal.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What are the issues with India-Nepal relations?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

India-Nepal <\/span>bilateral relations<\/span><\/b> reached a <\/span>historic low<\/span><\/b> when the <\/span>Indian blockade <\/span><\/b>was done in September 2015.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

After demonetisation, <\/b>India refused to accept the demonetised rupee bills from the <\/span>Nepal Rastra Bank<\/span><\/b>.<\/p>\n

Poor perception of <\/span>India\u2019s trust in Nepal<\/span><\/b>. For example, the passengers boarding flights from Nepal to India are subjected to a <\/span>pre-boarding security check<\/span><\/b>. This happens despite 20 years of the <\/span>hijacking of an Indian Airlines aircraft<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

India has not welcomed the million-grant assistance proposed by <\/span>Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), a US government foreign aid agency<\/span><\/b> and approved by the Nepali parliament. It may prevent improvement in the India-Nepal relationship and give a dent to the <\/span>Indo-US relationship<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Nepal is often blamed for playing <\/span>geopolitical<\/span><\/b> games between <\/span>China<\/span><\/b> and <\/span>India<\/span><\/b> due to its unique geographical location.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

China<\/span><\/b> is actively engaged in Nepal. It has made inroads into the politics of Nepal. For example, it sponsored an <\/span>anti-MCC campaign<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Since July 2020, The <\/span>Nepal Parliament<\/span><\/b> has been <\/span>dysfunctional<\/span><\/b> due to development of the cracks within the former Communist alliance.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is the way forward?<\/span><\/b>
\n<\/span><\/h5>\n

First<\/strong><\/em>, India can build trust in Nepal through a <\/span>power trade agreement<\/span><\/b>. The hydropower will remain the only source that can manage peak demand in India despite India\u2019s focus on solar energy projects in India.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Second<\/strong><\/em>, both countries should <\/span>promote trade and transit arrangements<\/span><\/b> through electronic platforms. It can provide many new opportunities for businesses on both sides of the border.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Third<\/strong><\/em>, Nepal needs to work upon the <\/span>Bilateral Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (BIPPA) <\/span><\/b>signed between India and Nepal. Its implementation would attract more foreign investments from Indian investors.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Fourth<\/strong><\/em>, New Nepali leadership can provide confidence to India that Nepal is interested to work with India.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
