The Odisha Government has conducted the Annual Dolphin Census recently.<\/span><\/p>\n The Census was carried out in Chilika lake, Rajnagar Mangrove wildlife division , Baleswar wildlife division, Bhadrak wildlife division, Puri wildlife division and Berhampur forest division.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The Dolphin population recorded along Odisha’s coast and in its water bodies <\/span>has increased <\/b>overall. It has gone up from 544 in 2021 to 726 in 2022.<\/span><\/p>\n A total of six species of dolphins \u2014 <\/span>Irrawaddy, bottlenose, humpback<\/b><\/a>, striped, finless and\u00a0<\/b>Spinner dolphins <\/b>have been found in this census.<\/span><\/p>\n The increase in the dolphin population in Odisha is <\/span>largely due to high sightings in the <\/b>Mangrove Wildlife Division of the Rajnagar jurisdiction,<\/b> where 540 dolphins were\u00a0<\/span>found in 2022 compared with 342 in 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n However, the <\/span>Chilika lake<\/b> which is a major tourist attraction for its Irrawaddy dolphins saw the number of <\/span>Irrawaddy Dolphins drop sharply<\/b> from 162 in 2021 to 151 in 2022.<\/span><\/p>\n In the remaining four Wildlife Divisions \u2014 <\/span>Puri, Berhampur, Bhadrak and Balasore<\/b> \u2014\u00a0<\/span>dolphin sightings were <\/span>negligible.<\/b><\/p>\n Note:<\/strong><\/p>\n Striped Dolphin: <\/b>It \u200b\u200bi<\/span>s an extensively studied dolphin, found in temperate and tropical waters of all the world’s oceans. <\/span>IUCN Status:<\/b> Least Concern.<\/span><\/p>\n Striped Dolphin:<\/b> It is a small dolphin found in offshore tropical waters around the world.
