{"id":177478,"date":"2022-04-04T20:24:51","date_gmt":"2022-04-04T14:54:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=177478"},"modified":"2022-04-04T20:24:51","modified_gmt":"2022-04-04T14:54:51","slug":"nfc-technology-for-instant-payments","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/nfc-technology-for-instant-payments\/","title":{"rendered":"NFC technology for instant payments"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h5><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google Pay has launched a new feature in India called \u2018Tap to pay for UPI\u2019 in collaboration with Pine Labs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This feature will allow users with NFC-enabled Android smartphones and UPI accounts linked to Google Pay to carry out transactions just by tapping their phones on any Pine Labs Android point-of-sale (POS) terminal across the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What is Near Field Communication(NFC) Technology?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NFC is a short-range wireless connectivity technology that allows NFC-enabled devices to communicate with each other and transfer information quickly and easily with a single touch \u2014 whether to pay bills, exchange business cards, download coupons or share a document.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>How does NFC work?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NFC transmits data through electromagnetic radio fields to enable communication between two devices.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both devices must contain NFC chips as transactions take place within a very short distance. NFC-enabled devices must be either physically touching or within a few centimetres from each other for data transfer to occur.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What are the applications of NFC Technology? <\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NFC has a wide range of applications, such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 Driving payment services like Google Wallet and Apple Pay.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 Wireless Charging and generating contact-less tickets for public transport.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 NFC is behind the cards that can wave over card readers in subway turnstiles and on buses to check tickets.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 With just a touch, NFC can also set up WiFi and Bluetooth devices in homes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 It also has an application in healthcare to monitor patient stats through NFC-enabled wristbands.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>How safe is NFC Technology?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><b>Firstly, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NFC technology is designed for an operation between devices within a few centimetres from each other. This makes it difficult for attackers to record the communication between the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">devices, compared to other wireless technologies which have a working distance of several meters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Secondly, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the user of the NFC-enabled device determines by the touch gesture which entity the NFC communication should take place with, making it more difficult for the attacker to get connected.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>Where does NFC stand in comparison to other technologies?\u00a0<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are other wireless technologies available that are replacing cable-based connections.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>IrDa technology<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a short-range (a few meters) connection based on the exchange of data over <\/span><b>infrared light,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> where the two communication devices must be positioned within a line of sight. This technology is mainly used for remote control devices.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connections<\/strong>: These technologies are used for larger data communication.\u00a0 But the <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">user has to configure their device and pair them together for communication. The connection cannot be initiated by a simple touch gesture like in NFC.
