News:<\/span><\/b> On 24th Mar 2022, European negotiators finally agreed on the terms of a new legislation known as <\/span>the Digital Markets Act.<\/span><\/b> It is a key component of Europe\u2019s new digital strategy.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n It aims to regulate \u201c<\/span>gatekeepers<\/span><\/b>“, or <\/span>platforms<\/span><\/b> with a signific<\/span>ant presence in Europ<\/span><\/b>e in terms of their revenues and European user base.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n It aims to break, at least to some extent, the control of the <\/span>digital platforms<\/span><\/b> over the markets in which they operate.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n One of the key areas in which regulations are going to focus is going to be <\/span>interoperability<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n There is a clear scenario that some platforms are <\/span>dominating<\/span><\/b> in their given <\/span>vertical<\/span><\/b> or field across the globe. They can also to enter and dominate any other adjacent fields.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n For example, US companies have a <\/span>first-mover advantage<\/span><\/b> on the internet. They are <\/span>digitally dominating<\/span><\/b> in the European Market. Thus, it is difficult for the domestic players to acquire enough <\/span>market-share.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The regulation of the platform economy<\/span><\/b> will loosen the stronghold of the US platforms. It will give smaller companies in adjacent fields a chance to survive. For example, <\/span>messaging interoperability<\/span><\/b> with smaller messaging apps has been mandated under the law.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Absence of interoperability has a lot of <\/span>negative consequences<\/span><\/b>. For example, it reduces <\/span>choices available<\/span><\/b> to customers. It also affects the overall competitiveness of the market.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The interoperability at present could result in the immediate degradation of a key feature of <\/span>modern digital communication<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n If <\/span>messaging platforms<\/span><\/b> like WhatsApp and Signal which provide <\/span>end-to-end encrypted services <\/span><\/b>are integrated with other platforms which do not provide encrypted services, the <\/span>privacy of communication<\/span><\/b> across the platforms might be affected.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The interoperability will make it impossible for anyone to offer <\/span>secure communications<\/span><\/b> at a global scale.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n In addition, various features like spam detection, identification of prohibited speech, etc. will not be able to function<\/strong> if messages are shared with other services.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n In the future, it might be possible to ensure such <\/span>privacy<\/span><\/b> across multiple interoperable applications.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n All countries of the world need to come together.
