\u202f<\/span>News<\/span><\/b>: Recently, India and Australia<\/span>, struck a trade deal known as the <\/span>India-Australia Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA)<\/span><\/b>. <\/span><\/p>\n The deal was brokered after two decades of efforts. It is said to be a \u201c<\/span>watershed moment\u201d<\/span><\/b> for bilateral relations for both India and Australia.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n It will enable <\/span>elimination<\/span><\/b> or <\/span>phased reduction of tariffs<\/span><\/b> on a range of <\/span>Australian exports to India.<\/span><\/b> The range of products includes coal, lentils, sheep meat, wool, lobsters, rare earths, wine and agricultural products.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The deal will promote <\/span>services exports<\/span><\/b>. It will strengthen our <\/span>people-to-people links<\/span><\/b>. For example, the trade deal will provide a quota for <\/span>chefs<\/span><\/b> and <\/span>yoga teachers<\/span><\/b>, Indian students will be provided a post-study work visa of 2-4 year, and professional services will be mutually recognized. Others things that will be included are licensed\/regulated occupations, and work and holiday visa arrangements for young professionals. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n It will help in taking advantage of the <\/span>Indian diaspora<\/span><\/b> which is called as the <\/span>national economic asset<\/span><\/b> of India. For example, one in five overseas students that live in Australia are from India.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Seeks to double bilateral trade and investments<\/strong> between India and Australia in the next five years.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Will\u202feliminate tariffs<\/strong> on more than 85% of Australian goods exports to India (valued at more than $12.6 billion a year).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Strategic importance –<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n –<\/strong> Both nations share norms and democratic principles and support a rules-based order in the Indo-Pacific region. Therefore, both nations are members of the Quad.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n –<\/strong> Further, both share<\/span> economic<\/span><\/b> and <\/span>geopolitical risk<\/span><\/b>s in the <\/span>Indo-Pacific region<\/span><\/b>. In this context, a trade agreement shows the diversification of its strategic and economic approach for both the countries.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Past<\/strong><\/p>\n –<\/strong> In the past, Indo-Australia ties were derailed due to multiple reasons. For example, Australia responded against <\/span>India\u2019s nuclear tests <\/span><\/b>conducted<\/span> in<\/span> 1998<\/span><\/b>. <\/span><\/p>\n –<\/strong> The relations were also derailed due to over-the-top reaction by Indian media\u2019s attacks on <\/span>Indian students in Melbourne<\/span><\/b> in 2009-2010.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Present<\/strong><\/p>\n –<\/strong> Recently, both India and Australia responded differently to the Russian invasion of Ukraine<\/strong>.
