Context<\/span><\/b>: Recently there have been debates and discussion over India\u2019s contribution and achievements in various domains of knowledge. <\/span><\/p>\n The debates arose because despite immense contributions, India\u2019s achievements<\/span> remain unattributed and uncelebrated despite 5,000 years old civilization. The topic became more important as India is going to celebrate its 75 years of Independence.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n India has contributed a lot since ancient times, which has been crucial in the development of modern concepts.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Albert Einstein once said, \u201cWe owe a lot to the Indians. They gave zero, and taught how to count\u201d.<\/em> <\/span><\/p>\n The scientific discovery could not have been possible without such contribution in the field of knowledge.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The <\/span>modern mathematical concep<\/span><\/b>ts<\/strong> were born in India several centuries ago – (1)<\/strong> In the 7th century CE, <\/span>Brahmagupta<\/span><\/b> proved that the product of a negative and a positive number is a negative number. (2) <\/strong>The <\/span>Virahanka<\/span><\/b> work<\/span><\/b> is similar to the Fibonacci Series, (3)<\/strong> Pingala\u2019s<\/span> Meru Prastara<\/span><\/b> can be related to <\/span>Pascal\u2019s Triangle<\/span><\/b>, and\u00a0 (4) <\/strong><\/span>Madhava<\/span><\/b> (c 1,400 CE) found the approximate value of pi (p), and (5)<\/strong> In fact, the Indian numeral system (e.g., <\/span>Bakhshali Manuscript)<\/span><\/b> is the source of the <\/span>Arabic numeral system.<\/span><\/b> Later, it was transmitted to Europe.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n In the field of <\/span>space sciences<\/span><\/b>, <\/span>Hinduism<\/span><\/b> related <\/span>ancient cosmological<\/span><\/b> ideas<\/span><\/b> that were central to Hinduism form the basis of modern cosmology. The Hindu religion faith related to an <\/span>infinite number of deaths and rebirths<\/span><\/b> has some similarities with the <\/span>theory of the multiverse.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n India was a centre of <\/span>manufacturing<\/span><\/b> and <\/span>trade<\/span><\/b>. The <\/span>Damascus swords <\/span><\/b>were made from <\/span>Wootz steel in India.<\/span><\/b> Till the 19th century, Lahore, Amritsar, Agra, Jaipur, Gwalior, Tanjore, Mysore and Golconda were some of the few manufacturing centres for the Wootz steel. The art was lost after the advent of the British<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n In fact, <\/span>Kautilya<\/span><\/b> advocated <\/span>interest rates<\/span><\/b> that varied with <\/span>risk<\/span><\/b> (His <\/span>treatise <\/span><\/b>known as<\/span> Sukraniti<\/span><\/b>). This concept is related to <\/span>constant<\/span><\/b> optimisation<\/span><\/b> of <\/span>risk<\/span><\/b> and <\/span>return<\/span><\/b>. These thoughts are the basis of theory of <\/span>differential interest rate<\/span><\/b> which is one of the founding pillars of modern economics.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n India\u2019s rich heritage comprises both <\/span>tangibles<\/span><\/b> like <\/span>architecture<\/span><\/b> and <\/span>intangibles<\/span><\/b> like the wealth of knowledge.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201c<\/span>Dhara: An Ode to Indian Knowledge Systems<\/span><\/b>\u201d has been launched by the Ministry of Culture in this direction.
