{"id":179303,"date":"2022-04-14T20:33:30","date_gmt":"2022-04-14T15:03:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=179303"},"modified":"2022-04-14T20:33:30","modified_gmt":"2022-04-14T15:03:30","slug":"fortifying-nutrition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/fortifying-nutrition\/","title":{"rendered":"Fortifying nutrition"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>News<\/strong>: <span class=\"p-content paywall\">The government\u2019s <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/cabinet-approves-distribution-of-fortified-rice-across-government-schemes\/\">decision<\/a><\/strong><\/span> to supply fortified rice across the country in phases by 2024 is a welcome move to address malnutrition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"p-content paywall\">At present, fortified rice is being supplied through the Targeted public Distribution System (TPDS) in one district each of 11 states under a pilot project running since 2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<table style=\"border-collapse: collapse; width: 100%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><strong>Must Read<\/strong>: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/food-fortification-in-india\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Food Fortification in India &#8211; Explained, pointwise<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Why fortification is essential?<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span class=\"p-content paywall\">Hunger and starvation deaths have come down, but <strong>undernourishment and imbalanced nutrition<\/strong> are still rampant and in fact growing.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"p-content paywall\">As per the National Family Health Survey -5, <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"p-content paywall\"><strong>&#8211;<\/strong> the proportion of <strong>anaemic women<\/strong> in the 15-49 age group has gone up from 53% in 2015-16 to 57% in 2019-20. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"p-content paywall\"><strong>&#8211;<\/strong> Under-five children suffering from the <strong>deficiency of iron and other essential nutrients<\/strong> has soared to 67.1% (an annual rise of almost 8 per cent during this period). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"p-content paywall\">Such <strong>nutritional disorders<\/strong> affect the physical and mental growth of children, resulting in a high incidence of \u201cstunting\u201d (short height) and \u201cwasting\u201d (low weight). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"p-content paywall\"><strong>Global Hunger Index 2021 ranked India 101st<\/strong> among 116 countries, placing it below its smaller neighbours like Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Nepal.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5>What are the potential benefits of the supply of the iron-fortified rice?<\/h5>\n<p><span class=\"p-content paywall\">The scheme, to supply iron-fortified rice, is expected to <strong>reduce stunting and wasting<\/strong> among kids by 2 per cent and anaemia in teenage girls and pregnant women by 9 per cent a year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"p-content paywall\"> Officials claim the scheme would help <strong>save<\/strong> about Rs 50,000 crore in<strong> health care expenses<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n<h5><span class=\"p-content paywall\">What are the concerns regarding the fortification scheme?<br \/>\n<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span class=\"p-content paywall\">Nutrition experts are doubtful about the effectiveness of fortified rice in meeting the desired goal of eradicating anaemia and undernourishment. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"p-content paywall\"><strong>&#8211;<\/strong> Their scepticism relates to<strong> absorption of iron<\/strong> in the human body. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"p-content paywall\"><strong>&#8211;<\/strong> This vital nutrient, needed for growth and development, requires various other minerals and vitamins for its absorption in the blood to produce haemoglobin. The problem with most of the ongoing nutrition-oriented government programmes is that they are <strong>focused primarily on filling the bellies rather than providing wholesome and nourishing food. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h5>What is the way forward?<\/h5>\n<p><span class=\"p-content paywall\">Nutritionists of the Indian Council of Medical Research, as also of the Hyderabad-based National Institute of Nutrition, believe that <strong>diversity in food intake holds the key to meet the requirement of micronutrients<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"p-content paywall\"><strong>&#8211;<\/strong> This can be ensured by including in the diets <strong>readily available and more nutritious foods<\/strong> like coarse cereals and millets, such as bajra (pearl millet), jowar (sorghum), and ragi (finger millet), besides pulses, eggs, milk, vegetables, and fruits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"p-content paywall\">Further, India&#8217;s agricultural research network is developing <strong>inherently nutrient-rich bio-fortified varieties of various food crops<\/strong> by tweaking their genetic structure through conventional and modern plant-breeding techniques. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"p-content paywall\"><strong>&#8211;<\/strong> The inclusion of these <strong>nutrition-enhanced grains<\/strong> in the food programmes would be the most practical and cost-effective means to alleviate malnutrition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Source<\/strong>: This post is based on the article \u201c<strong>Fortifying nutrition<\/strong>\u201d published in the <strong>Business Standard<\/strong> on <strong>14th Apr 22<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: The government\u2019s decision to supply fortified rice across the country in phases by 2024 is a welcome move to address malnutrition.
