News:<\/span><\/b> Recently, <\/span>India refused to <\/span>condemn Russia\u2019s military invasion<\/span><\/b>, and decided to continue trade with Russia. It has abstained from voting on United Nations resolutions. <\/span><\/p>\n In this context, a number of <\/span>diplomats<\/span><\/b>, officials, and ministers from across the globe <\/span>visited<\/span><\/b> India. This has raised India\u2019s role in global politics.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n India and America have seen <\/span>convergence of interests<\/span><\/b> based on the Chinese emergence and assertion.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n There is a relative power gap between <\/span>the two Asian powers<\/span><\/b>. For instance, China\u2019s economy is nearly six times India\u2019s size.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Indo-China border disputes:<\/span><\/b> 90,000 Indian and Chinese soldiers have been deployed in Ladakh for nearly two years now. Further, 15 rounds of negotiations have failed to result in <\/span>de-escalation <\/span><\/b>in certain border areas.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n India has been <\/span>accommodative<\/span><\/b> of Beijing\u2019s sensitivities. <\/span><\/p>\n –<\/strong> For example, the Indian government had instructed the U.S. officials to neither mention the <\/span>Chinese aggression<\/span><\/b> in any joint statement nor raise it in a strong manner otherwise. <\/span>India did not criticise China\u2019s clampdown in <\/span>Hong Kong<\/span><\/b>, and mistreatment of <\/span>Uighurs in Xinjiang<\/span><\/b>. In addition, India has kept the activities of the <\/span>Tibetan community<\/span><\/b> (including Dalai Lama) in India within limits that do not provoke Beijing.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n However, China is unconcerned about <\/span>Indian sensitivities<\/span><\/b>. <\/span><\/p>\n –<\/strong> For example, China signed a provocative statement on Kashmir at the <\/span>OIC meeting <\/span><\/b>in Islamabad. In addition, China has allowed <\/span>South Korean and Pakistani students<\/span><\/b> to return to China. However, it has not been extended to India.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n In fact, India has remained defensive about the criticism of its own strong-arm policies in Kashmir.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n India is the centrepiece of the Joe Biden administration\u2019s <\/span>Indo-Pacific strategy. <\/span><\/b>In fact, India\u2019s <\/span>Quad partners<\/span><\/b> (U.S., Japan, Australia) have imposed trade sanctions on Russia, and provided military aid to Ukraine.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The U.S.<\/span><\/b> has issued a warning of the consequences for India and other countries if they actively attempt to <\/span>circumvent<\/span><\/b> or <\/span>backfill the US sanctions<\/span><\/b>\u201d. For example, India and Russia are exploring ways of conducting <\/span>bilateral trade<\/span><\/b> by bypassing the <\/span>dollar-based financial system.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n China praised India for pursuing an <\/span>independent foreign policy<\/span><\/b>. It wishes India to move away from the Quad. It wants to reset its larger strategic interest with New Delhi. If there is any <\/span>reset in India and China tie<\/span><\/b>s<\/strong>, it will alter <\/span>New Delhi\u2019s relationship <\/span><\/b>with the U.S. Further, It will impact the <\/span>effectiveness<\/span><\/b> of Quad.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n India has stated that precondition for return to normalcy in China-India ties: (1) <\/span>restoration<\/span><\/b> of <\/span>status quo ante<\/span><\/b> of April 2020 in Ladakh; and (2) <\/span>disengagement<\/span><\/b> from remaining \u201c<\/span>friction points\u201d<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The Chinese minister offered to create a<\/span> virtual G-2 <\/span><\/b>in Asia.
