It was declared on the birthday of <\/span>Prof. Seshiah<\/span><\/b> who was conferred the Padma Shri in the field of medicine (as a part of the Republic Day honours this year).<\/span><\/p>\n Further, the novel coronavirus pandemic has shifted focus on a silent \u2018pandemic\u2019 called as the<\/span> Non-Communicable Disease (NCDs)<\/span><\/b> which spans across the world over the last few decades.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n In general, the NCDs include <\/span>diabetes<\/span><\/b> and related conditions such as obesity, <\/span>hypertension<\/span><\/b> and <\/span>heart disease. <\/span><\/b>Women can have <\/span>pre-existing diabetes<\/span><\/b> (or \u2018pre-gestational diabetes\u2019) and <\/span>Pregnancy-related diabetes<\/span><\/b> (or \u2018gestational diabetes\u2019). Both of these diseases can be categorized as <\/span>\u2018Hyperglycemia-in-Pregnancy (HIP)\u2019<\/span><\/b>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n How can diabetes become a pandemic in coming years?<\/span><\/b> These include an aging population, urbanisation, genetic predisposition, nutrition and lifestyle transition.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n In the 1980s, Prof. David Barker hypothesised that most of the <\/span>adult disease <\/span><\/b>can be traced to the<\/span> foetus stage<\/span><\/b>. Any adverse stimulus (say, an increased blood sugar level in mother) inside the <\/span>woman\u2019s womb,<\/span><\/b> may permanently affects the <\/span>structure<\/span><\/b>, the <\/span>functioning<\/span><\/b> and the <\/span>metabolism<\/span><\/b> of the developing human body. It happens at the cellular and tissue levels. The borne children develop diabetes or pre-diabetes at this stage. He is also prone to other related NCDs such as hypertension and heart disease.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n In fact, the diabetes\/HIP disease may even extend to next generations through <\/span>unfavourable genetic <\/span><\/b>and <\/span>epigenetic effects<\/span><\/b> from parent to the offspring. A baby girl is also prone to develop pregnancy-related diabetes.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The health of offspring and of further generations depends upon the metabolic health of the pregnant woman.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The \u2018Diabetes-in-Pregnancy\u2013Study Group of India\u2019 (DIPSI) recommended \u2018all pregnant women\u2019 should be subjected to testing for diabetes in the \u2018early weeks of pregnancy\u2019.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The diabetes and other NCDs can be checked well before conception.
