News:<\/span><\/b> Recently, the <\/span>Union Home minister<\/span><\/b> said that the citizens of States should communicate with each other in the \u201clanguage of India\u201d. They should choose Hindi as an alternative to English. This has sparked criticism from the opposition and various sections of Indian society.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n According to Census 2011, Hindi was reported as the <\/span>first choice of language <\/span><\/b>for communication by residents of only 12 of the 35 States and Union Territories (UTs)<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Hindi is not<\/strong> spoken by the majority<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n –<\/strong> 43% of Indians who speak \u201c<\/span>Hindi languages<\/span><\/b>\u201d include <\/span>56 languages<\/span><\/b> like Bhojpuri, Rajasthani, Hindi and Chhattisgarhi. Out of this, only 26% speak Hindi specifically as their mother tongue.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n There is a positive correlation between <\/span>a higher standard of living<\/span><\/b> and <\/span>a higher share of English speakers<\/span><\/b>. For example, the States\/UTs having <\/span>a higher share of English speakers<\/span><\/b> have higher HDI scores in comparison to States having <\/span>a higher share of Hindi speakers<\/span><\/b>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The <\/span>Hindi-speaking States<\/span><\/b> have been witnessing <\/span>net out-migration<\/span><\/b>. It means more people have been migrating towards the <\/span>non-Hindi speaking states <\/span><\/b>(<\/em>Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Gujarat, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Punjab and Delhi)<\/em> in search of better livelihoods.
