{"id":179957,"date":"2022-04-18T20:57:11","date_gmt":"2022-04-18T15:27:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=179957"},"modified":"2022-04-18T20:57:11","modified_gmt":"2022-04-18T15:27:11","slug":"centre-extends-tenure-of-green-permits","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/centre-extends-tenure-of-green-permits\/","title":{"rendered":"Centre extends tenure of green permits"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h5><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Union Environment Ministry has extended the tenure of Environmental Clearances(EC) granted for existing or new projects in several sectors.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What is Environmental Clearance(EC)?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Environmental Clearance(EC) <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a process that is mandatory for projects that are beyond a certain size.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Purpose<\/strong>: To assess the impact of the planned project on the environment and people and to try to abate\/minimize the same.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Process<\/strong>: It involves an environmental impact assessment of a potential project and sometimes public hearings involving the local people who might be affected by the project.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What is the issue with the Environment Clearance(EC) process currently?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the conditions of an EC is that a project must begin construction in the period that it has been granted an EC and if unable, a fresh process must begin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, due to multiple factors like delays in forest clearance, land acquisition, local issues, rehabilitation and resettlement and other factors which are often beyond the control of project proponents, the projects are delayed. This leads to projects being financially unviable.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What has the <\/b><b>Union Environment Ministry <\/b><b>done to overcome this issue?\u00a0<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Environment Ministry has extended the tenure of environmental clearances(EC) granted for existing or new projects in several sectors such as:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 EC for river valley projects will now have a 13-year validity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 EC for nuclear power projects or those involving the processing of nuclear fuel will now have a 15-year validity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 Mining leases are granted for a period of 50 years but the EC is valid for 30 years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 Projects and activities other than the mining and river valley projects will have their EC valid for 10 years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This post is based on the articl<\/span><b>e \u201cCentre extends tenure of green permits\u201d <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published in <\/span><b>The Hindu on 17th April 2022.<\/b><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is the News?
