It will allow sale, purchase and sharing of material as well as know-how between different stakeholders. In this relation, medicinal plants sector has come under focus.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
The curative plants of significant commercial value are Tulsi, Aloe Vera, Brahmi, Ashwagandha, Isabgol, Shankhapushpi, Atees, Karanj, Guggal, Bael, Satavari, Kalmegh, Ashok, Giloe, Safed Musli, and Amla.\u00a0<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
Why medicinal plant cultivation has become a lucrative agribusiness in India?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

Increasing use of relatively safe and <\/span>affordable plant-based remedies <\/span><\/b>for common ailments.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There has been burgeoning demand from the <\/span>pharmaceutical, cosmetics<\/span><\/b>, and other industries. About 40% of pharmaceutical products are derived from plants and other natural substances.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The cultivation of these plants doesn\u2019t require much <\/span>investment<\/span><\/b>, or <\/span>large landholdings<\/span><\/b>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The cultivation of medicinal plants yields high returns.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition, knowledge of the <\/span>medicinal plant-specific agronomic practices<\/span><\/b> is now readily available from various sources.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Many <\/span>public<\/span><\/b>– and <\/span>private-sector institutions<\/span><\/b> are providing training in growing medicinal plants.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The advent of contract farming in the medicinal plant sector has made it more lucrative. The growers have guaranteed buy-agreement of their entire produce at mutually agreed prices.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Several <\/span>farmers\u2019 producer organisations<\/span><\/b> (FPOs) and <\/span>start-ups<\/span><\/b> are now pioneer in this field. They have developed their own brands, exports curative herbs, their extracts, and other products.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The i<\/span>nternational demand<\/span><\/b> is growing.<\/span> For example, India shipped Ayurvedic drugs, skincare products, and other herbal items to Europe and other developed countries.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Worldwide, 80% people rely on <\/span>plant-based home remedies<\/span><\/b> for minor health issues and primary health care.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The traditional health management systems like Ayurveda, Homeopathy, Siddha and Unani have become a regular part of the Indian health care regime.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Where can India\u2019s plant species having curative traits be found?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

The plant species can be found in the country across <\/span>15<\/span><\/b> well-defined <\/span>agro-climatic zones<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

They are found in the <\/span>Himalayas, Western Ghats<\/span><\/b>, and regions unaffected by anthropogenic interventions, like parts of the<\/span> Andaman and Nicobar Islands.\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition, a large number of them are found in <\/span>botanical gardens<\/span><\/b> located in different phytogeographical regions.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The natural reserves are being depleted. Therefore, the plants are being <\/span>cultivated<\/span><\/b> on agricultural fields. For example, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, and Bihar are important producers of the medicinal plants in India.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What are the weaknesses in the medicinal plant market?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

The marketing is the weakest link in the value chain of herbal farming. There is dominance of middlemen and lack of transparency in <\/span>price discovery<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

More reform-oriented interventions are required to allow the medicinal plants sector to grow to its potential.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ways Forward<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

The BSI, the <\/span>National Medicinal Plants Board (NMPB)<\/span><\/b> and the <\/span>National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR)<\/span><\/b> are engaged in conserving and preserving medicinal plants.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Many states possess ample potential for herbal farming. Their potential remains untapped.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
