News:<\/span><\/b> Recently, there have been <\/span>global developments<\/span><\/b> of conflict and violence in Ukraine. It has been followed by the imposition of the western economic sanctions on Russia. This has presented new opportunities and threats to the world, especially India.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What have been the trends since the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

There was an evolution of a paradigm of <\/span>free societies<\/span><\/b>,<\/span> frictionless borders <\/span><\/b>and <\/span>open economies<\/span><\/b>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>global order<\/span><\/b> allowed freer movement of people, goods, services and capital across the world. Therefore, <\/span>global trade<\/span><\/b> and <\/span>per capita GDP <\/span><\/b>nearly doubled in this period.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

During this period, the Societies and economies in the world became <\/span>inter-dependent<\/span><\/b> in the pursuit of shared global prosperity. It led to fewer conflicts and more peace and prosperity.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What can be the impact of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, especially from an Indian perspective?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

This <\/span>global geo-economic conflict<\/span><\/b> can push the world to the Cold War era of <\/span>two dominant power blocs<\/span><\/b>. It will disbalance the<\/span> global economic equilibrium. <\/span><\/b>The <\/span>Russia-China bloc<\/span><\/b> is a large producer group. The western bloc is today\u2019s largest consumer group.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It has dismantled <\/span>inter-connectedness <\/span><\/b>and <\/span>trade<\/span><\/b> among nations. This led to <\/span>disruption<\/span><\/b> and <\/span>blockade<\/span><\/b> of various commodities like Russian natural gas, Russian & Ukrainian Wheat, Russian nickel. For example, Indian farmers run the risk of high fertilizer prices triggered by a global shortage.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What are the opportunities for India?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

First, the western group looks to <\/span>reduce dependence<\/span><\/b> on the Russia-China bloc of nations. Therefore, it offers opportunities to India. India can expand trade in the <\/span>current global economic structures<\/span><\/b> of free trade<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Second, the western nations have wished to develop a new paradigm of \u2018<\/span>free but principled trade\u2019<\/span><\/b>. India can gain from this \u2018<\/span>principled trade\u2019<\/span><\/b>. India is the <\/span>largest peace-loving democracy<\/span><\/b>. India can become a large producing nation for the world and a global economic powerhouse.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The present global situation presents the best opportunity to salvage India\u2019s economy. It can help create large numbers of <\/span>jobs <\/span><\/b>for our youth and women.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What are the challenges before India in capitalizing the new opportunities?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

The forced and hurried dismantling of the present order of the <\/span>American dollar<\/span><\/b> as the <\/span>global trade currency<\/span><\/b> and replacing it with rushed<\/span> bilateral local currency arrangements<\/span><\/b> can prove to be more detrimental for the global economy in the longer run.<\/span><\/p>\n

For example, <\/span>Indian rupee-Russian rouble agreement <\/span><\/b>in the late 1970s and 1980s, were fraught with risks.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

India\u2019s external sector is robust. India has the potential to expand trade. But the bilateral arrangements are unsustainable, unwieldy, and perilous.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Way Forward<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

Mahatma Gandhi <\/span><\/b>said India must be committed to<\/span> peace <\/span><\/b>and <\/span>non-violence,<\/span><\/b> both at home and in the world.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Earth is a <\/span>\u2018Global Village\u2019.<\/span><\/b> It is home for nearly eight billion people. It works on the transportation networks, the U.S. dollar as the reserve currency and integrated payment systems.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

India\u2019s economic future depends on trade with other nations. A reversal towards isolationism and protectionism can be bad for India.<\/span> It needs an accepted and established global currency to trade in and seamless trade settlements.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

India needs to get <\/span>free access <\/span><\/b>to the markets to capitalise on the available opportunities.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the long run, India stands to gain more from the established trading order as well as free access to the western markets instead of <\/span>bilateral arrangements<\/span><\/b> and a new and <\/span>parallel global trade structure<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

India needs a <\/span>non-aligned doctrine<\/span><\/b> for the looming new world order. It also needs a <\/span>non-disruptive geo-economic policy<\/span><\/b> to maintain the current global economic equilibrium.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Hence, it should adopt <\/span>a strategic economic self-interest doctrine <\/span><\/b>within the larger paradigm of it<\/span>s non-alignment foreign policy.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

India needs to balance the <\/span>current geo-economic equilibrium,\u00a0<\/span><\/b>and<\/span> needs to maintain its <\/span>domestic social equilibrium<\/span><\/b>. It requires people of all religions and castes to work together in factories.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Therefore, the government should address mutual distrust, hate and anger among citizens. It should promote <\/span>social harmony<\/span><\/b> which is <\/span>quintessential<\/span><\/b> for <\/span>economic prosperity.\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n
