News<\/span><\/b>: In the light of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the West is trying to shape a global consensus in favour its <\/span>democratic governance model<\/span><\/b>. <\/span><\/p>\n

This is leading to widening the divide between <\/span>authoritarian<\/span><\/b> and <\/span>democratic regimes<\/span><\/b>. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What have been the arguments against the democratic governance model?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

In last few years, the <\/span>Chinese<\/span><\/b> and <\/span>Russian models of governance<\/span><\/b> were promoted to challenge the <\/span>democratic models of political management <\/span><\/b>that is practiced in the west. These were projected based on the performance registered by both the models in various fields.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Chinese mode was more <\/span>efficient<\/span><\/b>. It delivered <\/span>high rates of economic growth<\/span><\/b>. It also looked stable. It looked highly attractive as the Western democracies were failing to provide solutions to the myriad problems faced by them in different areas.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The western democracies were seen as <\/span>chaotic<\/span><\/b> and unable to shape <\/span>long-term strategic goals<\/span><\/b>. They were facing <\/span>competing domestic demands <\/span><\/b>within the group of the western nations.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In response to<\/span> Biden\u2019s Summit for Democracy<\/span><\/b> in December 2021, China and Russia together decried the summit as \u201c<\/span>anti-democratic<\/span><\/b>“. It decried the western model of democracy. China asserted that \u2018<\/span>true democracy\u2019<\/span><\/b> exists in China under the Chinese Communist Party.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Such a narrative was developed, because as per <\/span>Chinese propagandists,<\/span><\/b> the confidence in their own model gives legitimacy to China\u2019s rise as a<\/span> legitimate power<\/span><\/b> in the <\/span>international hierarchy<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Why is the democratic governance model better than the Chinese and Russian Model of governance?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

At present, China is being publicly criticized for its covid management. <\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/strong> For example, China has for the <\/span>first time <\/span><\/b>officially admitted that three people have died in Shanghai due to <\/span>covid. Historically, <\/span><\/b>this is the first acknowledgment of any death in the country since March 2020. The authorities are being criticized publicly by the residents of Shanghai city<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At present, <\/span><\/b>Russia is being globally criticized. It has not been able to achieve <\/span>success<\/span><\/b> in Ukraine, and is facing <\/span>operational<\/span><\/b> and <\/span>tactical costs<\/span><\/b>, and also a wider s<\/strong><\/span>trategic failure.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Western democracies have been able to rise to the challenge posed by Russia. They have been able to form a relatively <\/span>united front<\/span><\/b> as a push-back against Russian aggression.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

China\u2019s \u2018<\/span>zero covid\u2019<\/span><\/b> strategy doesn\u2019t look that brilliant any more. The Chinese model has been exposed by the anger shown by Shanghai\u2019s residents.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A democratic country like India managed to contain covid relatively effectively. It was also able to mobilize the requisite <\/span>national resolve<\/span><\/b> to produce vaccines for the world.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Democracies are good at <\/span>self-flagellation\u00a0<\/span><\/b>(<\/em>excessive criticism of oneself)<\/em>. Their <\/span>self-critical approach <\/span><\/b>makes them strive to do better.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Way Forward<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

There is a danger that <\/span>autocracies<\/span><\/b> will succeed in shaping the <\/span>global narrative<\/span><\/b> in their favour. <\/span><\/p>\n

However, this is a <\/span>moment<\/span><\/b> that democracies of the world may unite against a single <\/span>threat<\/span><\/b>. They should make a loud and clear voice that there is <\/span>no real alternative<\/span><\/b> to democracy.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
