News<\/strong>: Recently, the European Union (EU) has approved landmark legislation known as the<\/span> EU\u2019s Digital Services Act (DSA)<\/span><\/b>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n They are being used for <\/span>spreading disinformation <\/span><\/b>and <\/span>hate speech<\/span><\/b> to influence elections, racist violence etc.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The major problem lies in <\/span>revenue models<\/span><\/b> of the social media platforms. They depend on engagement.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The Act makes social media businesses more responsible for content disseminated and amplified on their platforms. In fact, it gives<\/span> social media\u202fusers<\/span><\/b> protection against hate speech, disinformation, and other harmful content.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n It specifies fines of up to 6% of <\/span>annual global revenues<\/span><\/b>, or outright bans, for non-compliance. This sort of <\/span>substantial penalties <\/span><\/b>could force platforms to review their business models.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The government can ask platforms to <\/span>take down<\/span><\/b> content that may be deemed illegal. For example, stuff promoting terrorism, child sexual abuse, hate speech, and commercial scams.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The social media platforms like TikTok, Facebook, and Twitter would have to create <\/span>tools<\/span><\/b> that would allow the users to <\/span>flag<\/span><\/b> such content in \u201ceasy, effective ways\u201d. Marketplaces like Amazon would have to create tools to allow users to flag products.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Platforms can <\/span>review content<\/span><\/b> before deciding upon deletion, and must carry out annual reviews and risk assessments of content.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n It bans <\/span>advertisements<\/span><\/b> targeted at minors, as well as advertisements specifically based on gender, ethnicity, or sexual orientation.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n It bans the <\/span>deceptive techniques<\/span><\/b> used to nudge people into online commitments. For example, signing up by default for online services.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The companies should do <\/span>content-moderation <\/span><\/b>while focussing to <\/span>maximise user-engagement.<\/span><\/b> They should not<\/span> use algorithms designed to flood the individual\u2019s timeline with a content of poor quality.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The new act can help the EU and its nations to safeguards free speech.
