They concluded that poverty in India had declined considerably in recent years.<\/span><\/p>\n In this backdrop, the government has done well to restart the consumer expenditure survey process because the survey is critical for understanding the functioning of the Indian economy. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The importance of timely collection and dissemination of data cannot be overstated in a rapidly changing economic environment. It is perhaps the most powerful tool to guide policy interventions. <\/span><\/p>\n Indian Economy has witnessed severe impact on <\/span>employment<\/span><\/b> and <\/span>income<\/span><\/b> over the past two years due to pandemic-induced disruption. The disruption is likely to have affected <\/span>consumption<\/span><\/b> significantly.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The<\/span> fiscal intervention<\/span><\/b>s were made during the pandemic. It involved the distribution of <\/span>free food grains<\/span><\/b> to a large number of households.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The government has done well to restart the economic activities and economic processes in India.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n There has been a lack of more recent and official consumption data. Therefore, Economists had to adopt <\/span>different methods<\/span><\/b> to gauge the level of poverty.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The government had decided to scrap the <\/span>consumer expenditure survey<\/span><\/b> conducted in 2017-18 because of data quality issues.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n A <\/span>fresh survey<\/span><\/b> has not been conducted thereafter because of the outbreak of the pandemic.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n It has been argued that the <\/span>consumption basket<\/span><\/b> of Indian households has changed significantly over the last 10 years due to a <\/span>growing economy<\/span><\/b>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The weighting of food in the consumption basket has declined. The expenditure on services has increased.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Now the pandemic is under control, therefore, a <\/span>new consumer expenditure survey<\/span><\/b> must be carried out as soon as possible. The outcome of the survey would be critical for gauging the <\/span>state of household consumption<\/span><\/b>, poverty, or revising the base for GDP estimates and the consumer price index.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The <\/span>inflation rate<\/span><\/b> based on <\/span>headline consumer price index <\/span><\/b>is the nominal anchor for monetary policy. Therefore, the index must be appropriately updated.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The <\/span>data<\/span><\/b> is the most <\/span>powerful tool<\/span><\/b> to guide <\/span>policy interventions.<\/span><\/b> Therefore, it must be timely collected and disseminated in a rapidly changing economic environment.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The government should also publish a new <\/span>producer price index<\/span><\/b>. can measure output, consumption, and price changes more accurately.
