It<\/span> is expected to create a hydrogen economy and further boost India\u2019s energy transition. <\/span><\/p>\n Further, According to The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), India\u2019s hydrogen consumption is anticipated to leapfrog by 2050.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n In the long run, two envisioned prominent fuels are <\/span>hydrogen<\/span><\/b> and <\/span>electricity<\/span><\/b>. Thus, Hydrogen is a new age fuel and is touted as <\/span>India\u2019s gateway<\/span><\/b> to <\/span>energy independence<\/span><\/b>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Hydrogen can be stored on a large scale and for a longer duration. It has the huge potential to <\/span>complement<\/span><\/b> renewable energy in India.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n It can accelerate India\u2019s <\/span>clean energy transition<\/span><\/b>, thereby supporting India\u2019s ambitious plan to achieve 500 GW renewable capacity by 2030.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Hydrogen fulfils the three Es of India\u2019s energy road map \u2014 energy security, energy sustainability and energy access.<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n Hydrogen fuel can help in the <\/span>decarbonisation <\/span><\/b>of India\u2019s transport sector and India\u2019s industrial sector, like iron and steel, aluminium, copper sectors.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n In comparison, the hydrogen <\/span>fuel cell vehicles<\/span><\/b> are more ideal for <\/span>long-haul transportation <\/span><\/b>than the Li-Ion batteries. They have the capacity for <\/span>faster fuelling <\/span><\/b>and <\/span>long-driving range<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Hydrogen could help India to transition from the status of an energy importer to a dominant exporter<\/strong> over the next few decades.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n It can help in achieving the <\/span>Paris Agreement\u2019s goal<\/span><\/b> to limit global warming to 2\u00b0C compared to pre-industrial levels.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Hydrogen could lay the foundation of a new India which would be <\/span>energy-independent; a global climate leader<\/span><\/b> and <\/span>international energy power<\/span><\/b>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n It can help India achieve Prime Minister Modi\u2019s commitment of <\/span>Net Zero by 2070<\/span><\/b> in making India <\/span>\u2018Aatmanirbhar in energy\u2019.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The hydrogen fuel cell requires electrolysers. Therefore, India would be required to augment its <\/span>electrolyser production capacity.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The hydrogen fuel production would entail an <\/span>exponential increase<\/span><\/b> in <\/span>electricity demand<\/span><\/b>. India would require 110-130% of its current total electricity generation (2020-21) by 2050<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The hydrogen manufacturing requires a lot of water<\/strong> (For example, production of 1 kg of hydrogen by electrolysis requires around nine litres of water). Therefore, water scarcity could also pose a challenge. It can increase the cost of production<\/strong> of hydrogen fuel.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n A road map for rapid growth in demand for electricity, especially from renewables should be prepared.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Therefore, hydrogen project planning should be holistic and targeted in areas that are not water-scarce.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n India should strive to seize economic opportunity so that industry can be encouraged to its full potential<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n D<\/span><\/b>emand side:\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0The mature industries such as refining and fertilisers, should be mandated to buy hydrogen fuel.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0Government should incentivise industries manufacturing low emission hydrogen-based products like green steel and green cement.<\/span> \u00a0Hydrogen can be blended with natural gas. For example, H-CNG stations can be promoted.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0To promote FCEVs, Hydrogen fuel stations may be planned on dedicated corridors where long-distance trucking is widespread\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0The concept of carbon tariffs needs to be introduced on the lines of European countries.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Supply side<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n R&D investment should be accelerated to bring its cost at par with fossils.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation (SATAT) scheme could be leveraged by exploring biogas conversion into hydrogen.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n A Viability Gap Funding (VGF) scheme may be introduced for hydrogen-based projects to commercialise and scale-up nascent technologies,\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The Priority Sector Lending (PSL) can be extended to electrolyser manufacturing and hydrogen projects to promote affordable financing.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The government can launch <\/span>the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme<\/span><\/b> reducing the cost of electrolysers. This could help India become a global hub for electrolyser manufacturing and green hydrogen.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n On the transportation front<\/span><\/b>,\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Ammonia, having high energy density, could be promoted as a mode of transportation.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The existing infrastructure used for natural gas transportation can be used for hydrogen gas transportation.
