Here\u2019s what you need to know about this Tughlaq-era monument"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h5><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Delhi government is about to renovate the 14th-century monument, Malcha Mahal.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What is Malcha Mahal?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Malcha Mahal is located in Delhi. It was built in 1325 by the then Sultan Firoz Shah Tughlaq and was used as a hunting lodge for a long time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It later became the residence of the descendants of the Nawab of Awadh.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It came to be known as \u2018Wilayat Mahal\u2019 after Begum Wilayat Mahal of Awadh who claimed that she was a member of the royal family of Oudh. She was given the palace by the government in 1985.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When she died by suicide in 1993, it came into the ownership of her daughter Sakina Mahal, and son Prince Ali Raza (Cyrus), who died in 2017, his sister passed away some years before that.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>Who was Firoz Shah Tughlaq?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Firoz Shah Tughlaq was born in 1309. He was the third ruler of the Tughlaq dynasty and ruled over Delhi from 1320 to 1412 AD. Firoz Shah Tughlaq was in power from 1351 to 1388 AD.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The British called him the \u2018<strong>father of the irrigation department<\/strong>\u2019 because of the many gardens and canals that he built.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>Taxes imposed under Firoz Shah Tughlaq<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><b>Kharaj:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Land tax equal to one-tenth of the produce of the land.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Zakat:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> two and a half per cent tax on property of\u00a0 Muslims<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Kham<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: War Booty tax in which 1\/5th was the state&#8217;s share and 4\/5th was given to soldiers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Jaziya:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> levied on the non-Muslim subjects, particularly the Hindus. Women and children were, however, exempted from the taxes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>Contributions<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He established the <\/span><b>Diwan-i-Khairat<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8212; office for charity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He established the <\/span><b>Diwan-i-Bundagan <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8212; department of slave.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He made <\/span><b>Sarais (rest houses)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the benefit of merchants and other travellers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Established four new towns, <\/span><b>Firozabad, Fatehabad, Jaunpur and Hissar.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Source:\u00a0 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The post is based on an article<\/span><b> \u201cMalcha Mahal to be restored soon?
