However, it <strong>subsumed nearly 61 other languages<\/strong> (like Bhojpuri) spoken in parts of Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:2,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559740&quot;:420}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">There is a <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">linguistic pluralism <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">in Indian society<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> As per the 1961 Census, there were a total of 1,652 \u2018mother tongues\u2019 in India. Therefore, it may lead to <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">language-based discrimination<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">. For example, Kashmiri language suffers in its land of birth by the dominance of Urdu (the state language). In addition, many other South Asian languages are dominated by Hindi.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:2,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559740&quot;:420}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The imposition of one language is based on the <strong>misinterpretation of the political map as cultural map<\/strong> and linguistic or the misinterpretation of the cultural maps as political map.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:2,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559740&quot;:420}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h5>What is wrong with the idea of one nation, one language?<\/h5>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">There are problems with the <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">romantic notion<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> of \u201c<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">one nation, one language<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201d which means imposition of One language over a large geographic zone of <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">multi-lingual landmas<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\"><strong>s<\/strong>.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The imposition of one language over others leads to <strong>h<\/strong><\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">atredness<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> against the imposed language. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">For example, <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\"><strong>&#8211;<\/strong> <strong>a)<\/strong> Sri Lanka declared Sinhalese as the <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">sole official language<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> with the exclusion of Tamil. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">It led to the eruption of the demand for a separate Tamil nation<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\"><strong>&#8211; b)<\/strong> the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Eastern Pakistan (later Bangladesh) partitioned from Western Pakistan because the latter was imposing Urdu on the former. Urdu was being imposed to unify them as Urdu will mediate between the <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">two distinct cultural zones <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">in which the former was<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> a Bengali speaking territory <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">and the latter was a<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> Punjabi speaking territory.<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:2,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:150,&quot;335559740&quot;:390}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">In contrast, the nations that accommodated <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">linguistic diversity<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> prospered. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">For example, <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\"><strong>&#8211; a)<\/strong> Singapore has a <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">multi-ethnic population<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> (Chinese, Malay and Indian). In contrast, Singapore opted for <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">English <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">as the official language. English language proficiency also made the city state a global business hub. Otherwise, the country would have fallen apart<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">&#8211; b) South Africa\u2019s national anthem<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> is a <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">five-language lyrical composition<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">. It has accommodative linguistic policy which helped it to become the emerging leader of the African continent<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Way Forward<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:2,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559740&quot;:420}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">India should have a <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">robust language policy<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">.
