Therefore,<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> India\u2019s economic growth <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">should be <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">sustainable<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">. The <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">consumer\u2019s economic activities <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">like driving or air-conditioning and the<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> producer\u2019s economic activities<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> such as electricity generation and manufacturing are <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">inefficient <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">in nature. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">They cause emissions, leading to pollution and global warming. These <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">negative externalities <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">are not reflected in the costs of production and consumption. This involves regulations for reducing emissions like setting emission levels and f<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">ixing limits of emissions<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">. I would work well for regulating the <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">pre-fixed levels of emissions.<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> This option will lead to <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">near-efficient outcomes. Initially, <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">the firms reduces the emissions, the marginal cost of abatement rises. However, the firm will stop reducing emissions and choose to pay tax at the point when the cost of abatement becomes higher than the rate of tax.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:2,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559740&quot;:420}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The government can<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"none\">introduce <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">an auction-based carbon trading scheme<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">. It will spur higher efficiency. The price of certificates will be determined in the free market between the firms facing low and high abatement costs. It will determine the <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">optimal<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> and <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">cost-efficient levels<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> of emissions reduction. The firms will have choice to either mitigate or trade. The firms having low abatement-cost will keep reducing emissions as they would profit by trading the certificates.
