News<\/span><\/b>: Recently, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh declared their intention to provide the MBBS course in Hindi.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n This will help counter the <\/span>hegemony<\/span><\/b> of English in <\/span>professional education<\/span><\/b>. Few countries such as <\/span>Germany<\/span><\/b> and <\/span>China<\/span><\/b> have long been doing so successfully. Therefore, the Indian government can also replicate this in India.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n One of the intentions of the move is to <\/span>increase access<\/span><\/b> to <\/span>medical education<\/span><\/b> beyond the <\/span>English-knowing elite<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The measure would entail <\/span>significant costs.<\/span><\/b> The implementation would<\/span> demand <\/span>regulatory<\/span><\/b> and <\/span>administrative alteration<\/span><\/b>s. For example, translation of educational materials, training of trainers, etc. Further, the costs will depend on the <\/span>scale of implementation<\/span><\/b> and need not necessarily be a deterrent.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n An argument advanced by critics is that this measure is fuelled by misplaced nationalistic sentiments.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n This would erode the <\/span>competitive advantage<\/span><\/b> which Indian graduates have in the global scientific arena.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n In contrast to Germany and China where local languages are used, English is firmly entrenched in India. Therefore, there will be two-fold challenges. First, the measure could face <\/span>considerable resistance<\/span><\/b> in assimilating local language into the existing ecosystem. Second, it is unlikely to spur <\/span>enough demand<\/span><\/b>. For example, this has already been witnessed in the case of engineering courses.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n If MBBS is taught in the regional language, then <\/span>postgraduate medical courses <\/span><\/b>and other medical courses would also need to be conceived in regional languages.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n At present, the government wishes to expand the <\/span>private sector\u2019s<\/span><\/b> scope in medical education. However, the private sector is unlikely to welcome the move in the field of medical education.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n There is no oblivious correlation between knowledge of <\/span>English<\/span><\/b> and <\/span>socioeconomic status<\/span><\/b> in Indian society.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Today, a <\/span>considerable proportion<\/span><\/b> of medical graduates who have studied in English are employed in <\/span>allied sectors <\/span><\/b>(research, pharmaceuticals, administration etc.). There medium graduates in vernacular language are unlikely to be welcomed in these allied sectors.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n It would lead to development of an <\/span>implicit hierarchy<\/span><\/b> between <\/span>non-English medium <\/span><\/b>and <\/span>English medium medical graduates<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The <\/span>diversity<\/span><\/b> and <\/span>multiplicity of languages<\/span><\/b> across and within states thwarts tge vernacularisation of medical education.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Medical doctors are <\/span>highly mobile professionals. <\/span><\/b>English medium medical graduates can find jobs across the country and the world.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n English is a <\/span>mutually-intelligible<\/span><\/b> option<\/span><\/b> in <\/span>technical<\/span><\/b> as well as <\/span>routine dealings<\/span><\/b> and <\/span>interactions<\/span><\/b>. Therefore, numerous local languages based medical education can lead to chaos.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Going for a <\/span>select few languages<\/span><\/b> with a large following could be an <\/span>optimum middle-path<\/span><\/b>. However, this is unlikely to obviate the need for <\/span>incorporating basic English skills<\/span><\/b> in the curriculum.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n An <\/span>incremental approach<\/span><\/b> should be adopted in providing medical education in regional languages. For example, the government can start providing <\/span>paramedical courses<\/span><\/b> in the regional language. Such paramedical workers are often <\/span>less mobile<\/span><\/b> and <\/span>function closer<\/span><\/b> to the <\/span>patients<\/span><\/b>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Further, <\/span>vernacularisation<\/span><\/b> is one of many reforms in medical education.
