He will attend the 2<\/span>nd<\/span> India-Nordic summit.<\/span><\/b> These visits signal a glimpse of <\/span>India\u2019s post-Russian strategic future<\/span><\/b> in Europe.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The Western sanctions have been imposed on Russia. Therefore, Russia is <\/span>deepening<\/span><\/b> its <\/span>alliance<\/span><\/b> with China.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n India is also working to boost up its bilateral partnerships with key European countries\u2014 Germany and France.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Both countries have been facing various challenges coming from the <\/span>Chinese muscular foreign<\/span><\/b> policy<\/span><\/b> and <\/span>assertion<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Germany is striving to reduce its <\/span>exposure<\/span><\/b> to <\/span>Russian<\/span><\/b> and <\/span>Chinese markets<\/span><\/b>. Therefore, India is an attractive new destination for German capital. The <\/span>full potential<\/span><\/b> of the commercial relationship is still to be realised.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n In fact, <\/span>Germany<\/span><\/b> is tied far more deeply to Russia than India. Germany\u2019s annual trade with Russia is about $60 billion while India\u2019s is at $10 bn. Further, Germany relies heavily on Russian natural gas. Therefore, Both India and Germany have been under pressure to <\/span>disentangle<\/span><\/b> from their Russian connection. In fact, both don\u2019t like the Western pressures to reduce ties with Russia.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n In the last few years, Delhi has learnt that the <\/span>Nordic Fiv<\/span><\/b>e \u2014 Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden can contribute significantly to <\/span>India\u2019s development<\/span><\/b>. They have a combined <\/span>GDP greater <\/span><\/b>than that of Russia.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The <\/span>First India-Nordic Summit<\/span><\/b> 2017<\/span><\/b> produced a <\/span>framework<\/span><\/b> for an <\/span>ambitious bilateral agenda<\/span><\/b> on <\/span>technological innovation<\/span><\/b> and <\/span>sustainable development. <\/span><\/b>It implies that India has acknowledged the Nordic region as one of the various sub-regions of Europe which is important for Indians.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Both countries laid the <\/span>foundation<\/span><\/b> for a <\/span>strong strategic partnership<\/span><\/b> in 2018. Both are concerned about the implications of the war in the <\/span>Indo-Pacific<\/span><\/b>. There is going to be the <\/span>next phase<\/span><\/b> in the <\/span>strategic partnership <\/span><\/b>between both the countries.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n France is<\/span> said to be<\/span> India\u2019s \u201cnew Russia<\/span><\/b>\u201d i.e., India\u2019s most <\/span>important strategic partner<\/span><\/b> in the coming period. For example: (1) France defended <\/span>India\u2019s interests<\/span><\/b> in the <\/span>UNSC<\/span><\/b>, (2) Both are partnering in the <\/span>Indo-Pacific theatre<\/span><\/b>, and (3) France is a major supplier of advanced arms to India.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n India\u2019s stand on the war in Ukraine and India\u2019s strategic ties to Moscow can cast shadow on India\u2019s relationship with all the European countries.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The Nordic world shares <\/span>frontiers<\/span><\/b> with <\/span>Russia<\/span><\/b> over land as well as in the waters of the Arctic. Therefore, apart from Denmark, Iceland, and Norway which are founding members of\u202f<\/span>NATO, the other <\/span>two members of the Nordic five Sweden and Finland are now rushing to end their long-standing neutral status and join\u202f<\/span>NATO.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n India-Europe<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Indian PM\u2019s tour to Europe can give India a better appreciation of the new mood in Europe developed due to Russian aggression.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The <\/span>India-Europe Trade and Technology Council <\/span><\/b>was launched by the European Union. This is the EU\u2019s second such council after the US.
