{"id":182710,"date":"2022-05-04T20:34:52","date_gmt":"2022-05-04T15:04:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=182710"},"modified":"2022-05-04T20:34:52","modified_gmt":"2022-05-04T15:04:52","slug":"explained-submarine-tech-that-india-wants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/explained-submarine-tech-that-india-wants\/","title":{"rendered":"Explained: Submarine tech that India wants"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h5><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">France\u2019s Naval Group, one of five shortlisted Original Equipment Manufacturers(OEM) for the Navy\u2019s P-75 India(P-75I) project to build six conventional submarines within the country, has announced that it would not bid for the project.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>Background<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1999, the Cabinet Committee on Security approved a 30-year plan for the Navy to indigenously build and induct 24 submarines by 2030.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the first phase, two lines of production were to be established \u2014 the first, <strong>P-75<\/strong>; the second, <strong>P-75I<\/strong>. Each line was to produce six submarines.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What is P-75?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/delivery-of-fourth-scorpene-submarine-vela-to-indian-navy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Click Here to read about it<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h5><b>What is P-75I?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/dac-approves-building-of-6-conventional-submarines-under-project-75i\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Click Here to read about it<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h5><b>What is the status of the P-75I Project?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">P-75I Project is running slightly behind the schedule due to the following reasons:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Firstly,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the project requires the Original Equipment Manufacturers(OEM) to demonstrate a sea-proven fuel cell <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Air-independent <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">propulsion<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AIP<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. While some manufacturers may have the technology, it may not have been proven at sea yet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Secondly,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the other <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">problem for the OEMs is the transfer of technology which is built into the process under the Strategic Partnership(SP) model. OEMs are unwilling to share all their expertise, especially the niche technologies that they have built.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What are Air-independent<\/b> <b>propulsion<\/b><b>(<\/b><b>AIP) Systems?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AIP technology allows a conventional submarine to remain submerged for much longer than ordinary diesel-electric submarines.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All conventional submarines have to surface to run their generators that recharge the batteries that allow the boat to function underwater.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the more frequently a submarine surfaces, the higher the chances of it being detected. AIP allows a submarine to remain submerged for more than a fortnight compared to two to three days for diesel-electric boats.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Types of AIPs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: There are different types of AIP mechanisms available; what India is looking for under the P-75I project is AIP based on fuel cells. These cells convert chemical energy into electrical energy, recharging the batteries of the submarine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The backdrop of AIP:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Installing AIP increases the length and weight of the boats as it requires pressurized Liquid OXygen(LOX) storage onboard and supplies for all three technologies.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What submarines does India have currently?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India has 16 conventional diesel-electric submarines which are classified as SSKs. After the last two Kalvari Class subs are commissioned under P-75, this number will go up to 18.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of the 16 SSKs, four are of Shishumar Class which were bought and then built in India in collaboration with the Germans starting 1980s; eight are Kilo Class or Sindhughosh Class submarines bought from Russia (including erstwhile USSR) between 1984 and 2000 and four are Kalvari Class built in India at <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited(MDL)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Note:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> India also has two nuclear ballistic submarines classified SSBN.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The post is based on the article <\/span><b>\u201cExplained: Submarine tech that India wants<\/b><b>\u201d <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published in <\/span><b>Indian Express <\/b>on<b> 4th May 2022.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is the News?
