{"id":183035,"date":"2022-05-06T20:19:03","date_gmt":"2022-05-06T14:49:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=183035"},"modified":"2022-05-06T20:19:03","modified_gmt":"2022-05-06T14:49:03","slug":"faster-cheaper-and-cleaner-power","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/faster-cheaper-and-cleaner-power\/","title":{"rendered":"Faster, cheaper and cleaner power"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Context<\/strong>: The <span class=\"p-content paywall\">Sate-owned NTPC said it plans to begin work on the construction of a new coal power plant, despite it being faster, cheaper and cleaner to build solar or wind.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5>Why India should transition to solar and wind energy?<\/h5>\n<p><span class=\"p-content paywall\"><strong>Record low tariffs<\/strong>: India has seen record low renewable energy tariffs of Rs 1.99 (2.6 US cents) per kilowatt-hour for solar power, and Rs 2.43 per kilowatt-hour for wind power. <\/span><span class=\"p-content paywall\">These are quite favourable as compared to tariff of electricity produced from non-renewable sources or new hydropower projects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"p-content paywall\"><strong>Solar generation<\/strong> is highest during summer months, which <strong>coincides with high power demand in India.<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"p-content paywall\">Power from the sun could <strong>also help meet the rising midday demand<\/strong> as the use of air conditioning increases in India.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"p-content paywall\">Moreover, unlike coal based generation, solar plants<strong> offer a sustainable pathway<\/strong> to bridge the gap between electricity demand and supply.<\/span><\/p>\n<table style=\"border-collapse: collapse; width: 100%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><em><span class=\"p-content paywall\">Coal power generation dominates India\u2019s power supply, followed by hydropower.
