The visit turned out to be a comprehensive discussion on bilateral, regional and international issues with a <\/span>India-France joint statement.\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Background of India-France relations<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

Both have decades of an <\/span>unusually productive partnership.<\/span><\/b> Both share <\/span>six-decade-long partnership<\/span><\/b> in the field of space and strong <\/span>defence partnership<\/span><\/b>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In 1998, France did not judge or impose sanctions on India for its nuclear tests. It was the first country to conclude a civil nuclear deal with India in 2008 after the NSG passed a waiver allowing India to access nuclear fuel and technology.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

France and India worked closely for the success of the Paris climate accord. Both co-founded the<\/span> International Solar Alliance<\/span><\/b> in 2015.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What have been the major points in the <\/span><\/b>India-France joint statement<\/span><\/b>?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

The joint statement recorded the differences on the Ukraine crisis. It included the possible ways of mitigating the war\u2019s \u201c<\/span>knock-on\u201d<\/span><\/b> effects.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

France invited India to cooperate in <\/span>the Food and Agriculture Resilience Mission (FARM) initiative<\/span><\/b>. The initiative ensures food security in the most <\/span>vulnerable countries<\/span><\/b>, particularly in terms of <\/span>wheat exports<\/span><\/b>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Discussion to set up industrial partnerships to build integrated supply chains in solar energy production for markets in Europe and Asia.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Both started a <\/span>bilateral strategic dialogue<\/span><\/b> on space issues, a frontier area contested by China, Russia and the U.S.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Way Forward<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

Recently, there were some developments in the construction of <\/span>six nuclear power plants<\/span><\/b> in Maharashtra\u2019s Jaitapur after more than 12 years of original MoU with the French company, EDF.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to improving relationships with <\/span>individual countries,<\/span><\/b> India should also give fillip to talks on the <\/span>India-EU FTA <\/span><\/b>(suspended since 2013).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
