{"id":183610,"date":"2022-05-10T20:51:51","date_gmt":"2022-05-10T15:21:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=183610"},"modified":"2022-05-10T20:51:51","modified_gmt":"2022-05-10T15:21:51","slug":"explained-what-is-monkeypox-a-smallpox-like-disease-from-africa-that-has-been-reported-in-the-uk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/explained-what-is-monkeypox-a-smallpox-like-disease-from-africa-that-has-been-reported-in-the-uk\/","title":{"rendered":"Explained: What is monkeypox, a smallpox-like disease from Africa that has been reported in the UK?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h5><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Health authorities in the United Kingdom have confirmed a case of monkeypox, a rare viral infection similar to smallpox in an individual who recently travelled to the UK from Nigeria.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What is Monkeypox?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monkeypox is a <\/span><b>viral zoonotic disease (a <\/b><b>disease that is transmitted from infected animals to humans)<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that occurs primarily in tropical rainforest areas of Central and West Africa and is occasionally exported to other regions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monkeypox belongs to the<\/span><b> orthopoxvirus, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which is a genus of viruses that also includes the variola virus which causes smallpox.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>First Discovered in<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: 1958 following two outbreaks of a pox-like disease in colonies of monkeys kept for research \u2014 which led to the name \u2018monkeypox\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Source of Transmission<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Human-to-human transmission is very limited. However, transmission, when it occurs, can be through contact with bodily fluids, lesions on the skin or on internal mucosal surfaces, such as in the mouth or throat, respiratory droplets and contaminated objects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The first human case <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was recorded in 1970 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) during a period of intensified effort to eliminate smallpox.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Symptoms<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: It begins with a fever, headache, muscle aches, backache, and exhaustion. It also causes the lymph nodes to swell (lymphadenopathy), which smallpox does not.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Incubation Period: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The incubation period (time from infection to symptoms) for monkeypox is usually 7-14 days but can range from 5-21 days.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Treatment<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: There is no safe, proven treatment for monkeypox yet. The WHO recommends supportive treatment depending on the symptoms.
