News<\/span><\/b>: Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited three European nations Europe at a critical time, shaped by the ongoing <\/span>Ukraine<\/span><\/b> war. <\/span><\/p>\n

India also attended the <\/span>sixth biennial India-Germany Inter-Governmental Consultations (IGC). <\/span><\/b>This was of critical importance for <\/span>\u2018long-standing bilateral commercial ties<\/span><\/b> and the \u2018<\/span>Strategic Partnership<\/span><\/b> between India and Germany.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Convergence of interests<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

The <\/span>assertive China<\/span><\/b> is being visible on the world stage and in particular, at the border with India, New Delhi. This <\/span>geopolitical factor<\/span><\/b> of the rise of China particularly in the Indo-Pacific seems the most <\/span>compelling necessity<\/span><\/b> to come together.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On the lines of India-Russia defence ties, European countries have significant reliance on Russian gas and crude.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In fact, Germany is also reaching out to other <\/span>Asian powers<\/span><\/b> and building on democratic alliances as an outcome of its <\/span>Indo-Pacific guidelines<\/span><\/b>. It means Germany wants to reap <\/span>democratic dividends<\/span><\/b> that may lead to a convergence of views and possibly policies on Russia between the two countries.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There is a convergence of issues of economics, technology and climate change between India and Germany. These are low hanging fruits.<\/span><\/p>\n

Issues in India-Germany relationship<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

India\u2019s position<\/span><\/b> on the Russian invasion of Ukraine, abstention on critical votes on the war and continued economic engagement like cheap crude import has attracted criticism from the West.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The convergence of interests to protect democratic values is not a <\/span>strong binding chord<\/span><\/b> between India and Germany. For example, India has adopted <\/span>pragmatism<\/span><\/b> on dealing with <\/span>Myanmar\u2019s junta.\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One of the factors that prevented the realization of the full potential in the bilateral relations between both the countries is the <\/span>lack of understanding<\/span><\/b> of each <\/span>other\u2019s strategic cultures<\/span><\/b> and <\/span>domestic politics.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What was the reason the Indian PM visited Europe in general and Germany in particular?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite India\u2019s position on Russian invasion of Ukraine, India wants to continue its <\/span>bilateral engagement<\/span><\/b> with European countries such as <\/span>Germany<\/span><\/b>, <\/span>France<\/span><\/b> and <\/span>Denmark<\/span><\/b>. The purpose is to portray India as a <\/span>swing power<\/span><\/b> that can move deftly on the <\/span>geopolitical<\/span><\/b> and <\/span>diplomatic chessboar<\/span><\/b>d.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

India insists that its position on the war is <\/span>non-partisan<\/span><\/b> and should be appreciated by its <\/span>allies<\/span><\/b> and <\/span>friends<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Way Forward<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

India has to bring in <\/span>more nuance<\/span><\/b> to its approach with Europe. India should work t prevent any isolation by the West. India needs to manage a delicate<\/span> balancing act. <\/span><\/b>India<\/span> should be able to assert its right to pursue its <\/span>national interests<\/span><\/b> and <\/span>strategic autonomy <\/span><\/b>in foreign policy.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite India\u2019s stand on Russia, Europe cannot overlook India\u2019s role as a major power and largest democracy in the world. For example, European countries expect India to amend its position on Russia and join hands with the European countries and the U.S.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Germany\u2019s invitation to India in the <\/span>G-7 meeting points<\/span><\/b> to the <\/span>emerging multipolarity<\/span><\/b> in the international system. The major powers such as Germany and India can play a greater role in bringing <\/span>peace<\/span><\/b> and <\/span>stability<\/span><\/b> in other theatres, particularly in <\/span>Afghanistan<\/span><\/b> and <\/span>the Indo-Pacific.\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In times of <\/span>shifting geopolitical alliances<\/span><\/b> and <\/span>realignments<\/span><\/b>, India and Germany can emerge as important poles in shaping the <\/span>new world order<\/span><\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n
