The relocation is aimed at reducing man-animal conflict and providing better living conditions to the displaced families.<\/p>\n<h5>About\u00a0Debrigarh wildlife sanctuary<\/h5>\n<p><strong>Debrigarh wildlife sanctuary<\/strong>\u00a0is located in Odisha. A third of the sanctuary\u2019s area is bound by the\u00a0<strong>Hirakud Dam<\/strong>, thus forming a mini catchment for the reservoir.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The sanctuary<\/strong>\u00a0is also an important biogeographic zone from both the ecological and environmental points of view.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Significance:<\/strong>\u00a0The sanctuary finds a special mention because of noted freedom fighter\u00a0<strong>Veer SurendraSai<\/strong>. During his rebellion against the British Veer SurendraSai made his base at \u2018Barapathara\u201d located within the sanctuary.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Vegetation:<\/strong>\u00a0The sanctuary comprises dry deciduous forests.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fauna:\u00a0<\/strong>The sanctuary is known for sightings of animals particularly four-horned antelope,\u00a0leopards, elephants, gaur, wild boar, Sambar, deer among others.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Bhitarkanika Mangroves<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<h5>News<\/h5>\n<p>The Wildlife Society of Orissa (WSO) has expressed concern over the massive diversion of fresh water from the Brahmani river basin which could pose a grave threat to the Bhitarkanika mangroves in Odisha.<\/p>\n<h5>About Bhitarkanika Mangroves<\/h5>\n<p><strong>Bhitarkanika Mangroves\u00a0<\/strong>is a mangrove wetland in Odisha. It covers an area of 650 km in the Brahmani and Baitarani river deltas.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ramsar Site<\/strong>: It was designated as a Ramsar Wetland of International\u00a0Importance\u00a0in 2002.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fauna:\u00a0<\/strong>It is\u00a0home to 62 mangrove species. Besides, 1,600 saltwater crocodiles crawl on the mudflats of the Bhitarkanika mangrove forest.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Significance:\u00a0<\/strong>Mangroves grow in brackish water. Proportionate freshwater flow from the Brahmani river basin and the Kharasrota river keep the salinity level of the water along the shore down.\u00a0 Hence, the brackish water becomes ideal for the mangroves to grow and stay healthy.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Mura-Drava-Danube (MDD) &#8211; World\u2019s first \u2018five-country biosphere reserve<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<h5>News<\/h5>\n<p>UNESCO designated\u00a0<strong>Mura-Drava-Danube (MDD) as the world\u2019s first \u2018five-country biosphere reserve.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The biosphere reserve covers 700\u00a0kilometres\u00a0of the Mura, Drava and Danube rivers and stretches across\u00a0<strong>Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary and Serbia.\u00a0<\/strong>The total area of the reserve \u2014 a million hectares \u2014 in the so-called \u2018<strong>Amazon of Europe<\/strong>\u2019, makes it the largest riverine protected area on the continent.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogmedia.testbook.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/capture-jpg-f8724694.jpeg?resize=698%2C420&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"Mura-Drava-Danube - World's First 5-Country Biosphere Reserve!\" width=\"580\" height=\"349\" \/><\/p>\n<h5>Reason for designating MDD a biosphere reserve<\/h5>\n<p>It will\u00a0advance the protection and\u00a0revitalisation\u00a0of the Mura-Drava-Danube area and boost sustainable business practices. It will also enhance cross-border cooperation.<\/p>\n<p>The aim is to\u00a0revitalize\u00a025,000 km of rivers and protect 30 per cent of the European Union\u2019s land area by 2030.<\/p>\n<h5>Significance of MDD<\/h5>\n<p><em><strong>Firstly<\/strong><\/em><strong>,\u00a0<\/strong>the reserve is home to floodplain forests, gravel and sand banks, river islands, oxbows and meadows.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Secondly,<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0it is home to continental Europe\u2019s highest density of breeding white-tailed eagle, as well as endangered species such as the little tern, black stork, otters, beavers and sturgeons.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Thirdly,<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0it is also an important annual resting and feeding place for more than 250,000 migratory birds, according to WWF.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Fourthly,<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0the reserve is inhabited by almost 900,000 people too.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Barbara Forest<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<h5>News<\/h5>\n<p>The Odisha Government is planning to bring the Barbara forest on the ecotourism map.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong>\u00a0Ecotourism is defined as responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment, sustains the well-being of the local people, and involves interpretation and education.<\/p>\n<h5>About the Barbara Forest<\/h5>\n<p>Barbara forest is located near\u00a0<strong>Chilika lake in coastal Odisha.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is known as\u00a0<strong>Asia\u2019s largest Teak and Sal forest.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Districts:\u00a0<\/strong>The forest touches three districts Khordha, Nayagarh and Ganjam of Odisha.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Named After:<\/strong>\u00a0The forest is named after a British forest officer\u2019s wife, who was killed in a tiger attack in the area 100-odd years ago.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Vegetation:\u00a0<\/strong>Barbara forests has patches of tropical semi-evergreen forests that contain many uncommon species of plants, ferns, and herbs which are rare in other forests of Odisha.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Significance:<\/strong>\u00a0It is said to be the\u00a0<strong>only forest in India that is guarded by the CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force)\u00a0<\/strong>for protecting natural resources.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dear Friends, This post is a part of our current affairs series for the UPSC IAS Prelims 2022.
