News<\/span><\/b>: India continues to face with the unrelenting heatwave. Although, heat waves are known to have been a reality for hundreds of years. But more extreme, frequent and prolonged heat waves in recent has exposed the long-term effects of climate change which have exacerbated them. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The <\/span>concepts<\/span><\/b> emerged in the 1970s, when Norwegian philosopher Arne N\u00e6ss sought to look beyond the popular pollution and conservation movements of his milieu to address environmental degradation.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n In his study, he viewed nature and themselves as two competing entities, therefore, established <\/span>a master-slave dynamic<\/span><\/b>. There are two strands of environmental philosophy that reinvent the relationship between nature and humans<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n (1) <\/span>Shallow ecologism<\/span><\/b>: Also referred to as <\/span>weak ecologism<\/span><\/b>, refers to the philosophy wherein the present <\/span>lifestyle<\/span><\/b> is continued, but with specific tweaks to minimise the damage to the environment. He termed this powerful and fashionable fight against pollution and resource depletion as shallow ecologism or environmentalism. <\/span><\/p>\n –<\/strong> For example, using vehicles that cause <\/span>less pollution<\/span><\/b> or <\/span>air conditioners<\/span><\/b> that do not release <\/span>chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs)<\/span><\/b>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n (2) Deep ecologism<\/strong>: It refers to the philosophy wherein the exponents believe that humans should <\/span>radically change<\/span><\/b> their relationship with nature. It rejects <\/span>shallow ecologism <\/span><\/b>as it prioritises humans above nature. It aims to <\/span>preserve nature<\/span><\/b> subsequent to <\/span>environmental destruction.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n –<\/strong> For instance, the wealthier countries are responsible for a majority of carbon emissions. For instance, the US constitutes only 5% of the world\u2019s population, but consumes 17% of the world\u2019s energy consumption. In addition,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n It aspires to <\/span>sustain nature<\/span><\/b> by making large-scale changes to our lifestyle. For example, limiting the <\/span>commercial farming<\/span><\/b>, reducing the artificial fattening of animals, or the reshaping of transport systems.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n In addition, it shifts the attention from pollution and conservation narratives<\/strong> to robust policy formulation and implementation. The policies must include technical skills and inventions which are <\/span>ecologically responsible<\/span><\/b>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n In addition, deep ecologism advocates for a re-evaluation of the \u2018<\/span>survival of the fittest\u2019 doctrine<\/span><\/b>. It advocates that doctrine should be understood through the perspective of <\/span>cooperation<\/span><\/b> and <\/span>coexistence<\/span><\/b> with nature, as opposed to <\/span>competition<\/span><\/b>, <\/span>exploitation<\/span><\/b> or <\/span>domination<\/span><\/b>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The deep ecologists prioritise a principle called the <\/span>\u2018live and let live<\/span><\/b>\u2019 attitude over an \u2018<\/span>either you or me\u2019<\/span><\/b> approach.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n What are the issues in Shallow ecologism?\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n A narrow focus on pollution and conservation movements is counterproductive. <\/span><\/p>\n The environment becomes more <\/span>vulnerable<\/span><\/b> when decisions are strongly influenced by <\/span>majority rule<\/span><\/b> without taking local interests into consideration<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Way Forward<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n We should adopt <\/span>ethically responsible ecologism<\/span><\/b> which operates in the interest of all economic classes.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n There should be <\/span>decentralisation<\/span><\/b> of<\/span> the decision-making process. This can be done by strengthening l<\/span>ocal autonomy<\/span><\/b>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n A <\/span>holistic approach<\/span><\/b> is needed to solve the <\/span>environmental crisi<\/span><\/b>s. It demands avoiding adoptiob of a \u2018<\/span>vague, global\u2019 approach<\/span><\/b>. It should acknowledge <\/span>regional differences<\/span><\/b> and the disparities between <\/span>under<\/span><\/b> and <\/span>over-developed nations<\/span><\/b>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The responsibility of solving the climate crisis falls on both <\/span>policy-makers<\/span><\/b>; and <\/span>scientists<\/span><\/b> and <\/span>ecologists<\/span><\/b>.
