This post covers current affairs of September, October 2021 and April 2022 months.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Science and Tech Current Affairs 2021-22<\/span><\/h1>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Chemistry and related aspects<\/span><\/h4>\n<p aria-level=\"1\"><\/p>\n<h4 aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>To Read Other Current Affairs Compilations<\/strong><\/span> &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/current-affairs-compilations-for-upsc-ias-prelims-2022\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Click here<\/a><\/h4>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Reference Materials(RM)<\/span><\/h3>\n<h5>News<\/h5>\n<p>The National Dope Testing Laboratory(NDTL) has indigenously developed six new and rare Reference Materials (RMs).<\/p>\n<h5>About Reference Materials(RM)<\/h5>\n<p>Reference Materials(RMs) are the purest form of chemical required for anti-doping analysis in all\u00a0World Anti-Doping Agency(WADA)-accredited Laboratories across the world.<\/p>\n<p>During testing of a sample, RMs provide identity confirmation for prohibited substances that do not have a threshold limit.<\/p>\n<h5>Significance of\u00a0Reference Materials(RM)<\/h5>\n<p>These Reference Materials are not readily available across the world but are needed by every WADA-accredited laboratory for their anti-doping analysis. India itself has been importing RMs from Canada and Australia.<\/p>\n<p>However, the introduction of these Reference Materials will improve anti-doping testing in India and would assist the entire anti-doping fraternity in strengthening their testing skills.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Nitrogen levels<\/span><\/h3>\n<h5>News<\/h5>\n<p>According to a report, an\u00a0imbalance in nitrogen availability has been reported across the globe with some places having an excess and others a shortage of the element.<\/p>\n<h5>About Nitrogen<\/h5>\n<p>Nitrogen is essential to life on Earth. It is a component of all proteins, and it can be found in all living systems.<\/p>\n<p>According to a study, there is an imbalance in nitrogen availability across the globe with some places having an excess and others a shortage of the element.<\/p>\n<h5>The decline in Nitrogen Availability<\/h5>\n<p>Nitrogen availability has been shrinking in grasslands in central North America for a hundred years.<\/p>\n<p>These declines are likely caused by multiple factors such as higher atmospheric carbon dioxide levels and warming and disturbances including wildfire.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note:\u00a0<\/strong>Higher atmospheric carbon dioxide fertilises plants, allowing its faster growth but in the process it dilutes the plant nitrogen, leading to a cascade of effects that lower the availability of nitrogen.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Impact<\/strong>:\u00a0Without nitrogen, plants grow slowly and produce smaller flowers and fruits. Their leaves turn yellowish and are less nutritious to insects, birds and animals.<\/p>\n<p>Further, low nitrogen availability could also limit plants\u2019 ability to capture CO2 from the atmosphere.<\/p>\n<h5>Excess Human Production of Nitrogen<\/h5>\n<p>According to a 2017 study, human production of nitrogen is now five times higher than it was 60 years ago.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Impact<\/strong>: When excessive nitrogen accumulates in the streams, inland lakes and coastal bodies of water, it could sometimes result in eutrophication, leading to harmful algal blooms, dead zones and fish kills.<\/p>\n<p>In humans, high levels of nitrogen in the groundwater are linked to intestinal cancers and miscarriages and can be fatal for infants.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Methanol<\/span><\/h3>\n<h5>News<\/h5>\n<p><strong>Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited(BHEL)\u00a0<\/strong>has successfully demonstrated a facility to create methanol from high ash Indian coal.<\/p>\n<h5>About Methanol<\/h5>\n<p><strong>Methanol is a clean-burning fuel\u00a0<\/strong>that can replace both petrol &amp; diesel in transportation &amp; LPG, Wood, Kerosene in cooking fuel. It can also replace diesel in Railways and could be an ideal complement to Hybrid and Electric Mobility.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Methanol can also be used to generate di-methyl ether (DME),\u00a0<\/strong>a liquid fuel that is very similar to diesel \u2014 existing diesel engines simply need to be minimally changed to use DME instead of diesel.<\/p>\n<h5>About the benefits of using Methanol<\/h5>\n<p><strong>Methanol burns efficiently<\/strong>\u00a0in all internal combustion engines, produces no particulate matter, no soot, almost nil SOX and NOX emissions (NEAR ZERO POLLUTION).<\/p>\n<p>To adopt Methanol as a transport fuel requires\u00a0<strong>minimal infrastructure modifications\u00a0and capital<\/strong>\u00a0both in vehicles and in terminal and distribution infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>Methanol\u00a0<strong>15% blend (M15) in petrol will reduce pollution<\/strong>\u00a0by 33% &amp; diesel replacement by methanol will reduce by more than 80%.<\/p>\n<h5>Production of Methanol<\/h5>\n<p><strong>Methanol can be produced from a variety of feedstocks like\u00a0<\/strong>Natural Gas, Coal (Indian High Ash Coal), Biomass, Municipal Solid waste and most importantly from CO2.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The majority of worldwide methanol production\u00a0<\/strong>is derived from natural gas, which is a relatively easy process.<\/p>\n<h5>Challenges associated with methanol production in India<\/h5>\n<p><strong>India doesn\u2019t have much of natural gas reserves.\u00a0<\/strong>Hence, producing methanol from imported natural gas leads to an outflow of foreign exchange and is sometimes uneconomical due to excessive prices of natural gas.<\/p>\n<p>The next best option is to utilise\u00a0India\u2019s abundant coal. However, due to the\u00a0<strong>high ash percentage of Indian coal<\/strong>, most internationally accessible technology will not be adequate for our demands.<\/p>\n<h5>India\u2019s Initiatives to increase Methanol Production<\/h5>\n<p>NITI Aayog\u2019s\u00a0<strong>\u2018Methanol Economy\u2019 programme<\/strong>\u00a0is aimed at reducing India\u2019s oil import bill, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and converting coal reserves and municipal solid waste into methanol.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<strong>Bureau of Indian Standards has notified 20% of DME blending with LPG<\/strong>, and a notification for other blends has been issued.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Railways is working towards blending methanol<\/strong>\u00a0in the range of 5-2% through direct fuel injection in locomotives.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In 2018, Assam Petrochemicals<\/strong>\u00a0launched Asia\u2019s<strong>\u00a0first canister-based methanol\u00a0<\/strong>cooking fuel programme.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Five methanol plants<\/strong>\u00a0based on high ash coal, five DME plants, and one natural gas-based methanol production plant with a capacity of 20 MMT\/annum in a joint venture with Israel, have been\u00a0planned.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Electronic polymer-based sensor for rapidly detecting explosives<\/span><\/h3>\n<h5><strong>News<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>For the first time, Indian scientists have developed a thermally stable and cost-effective electronic polymer-based sensor for rapidly detecting\u00a0<strong>nitro-aromatic chemicals<\/strong>\u00a0(<strong>NACs<\/strong>)\u00a0 used in high-energy explosives.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>About the findings<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Poly-nitroaromatic compounds in explosives generally require sophisticated instrumental techniques to detect them. But in the field, like military sites, extremist locations, they require simple, cheap, and selective field techniques which will be <strong>non-destructive in nature<\/strong>\u00a0to make quick decisions.<\/p>\n<p>But such Non-destructive sensing of nitroaromatic chemicals (NACs) is difficult. To overcome such disadvantages, a team of scientists has developed a<strong>\u00a0layer by layer (LBL) polymer detector<\/strong>\u00a0consisting of two organic polymers. The sensor device comprises three layers of polymers.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Significance of the invention<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>The detection of explosives without destroying them is essential for protection, and criminal investigations. The\u00a0<strong>tri-layer polymer matrix<\/strong>\u00a0was found to be a very\u00a0<strong>efficient molecular sensor<\/strong> for nitroaromatic chemicals. An electronic sensing device built around a polymer gas sensor can\u00a0<strong>quickly detect the explosive<\/strong>\u00a0on-site.<\/p>\n<p>The device can be\u00a0<strong>operated at room temperature<\/strong>, and has a low response time and <strong>negligible interference from other chemicals<\/strong>.
