Here, \u201cGaudiya\u201d refers to the Gaura or Gau\u1e0da region of Bengal with Vaishnavism meaning \u201cthe worship of Vishnu\u201d.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The focus of Gaudiya Vaishnavism is the\u00a0<\/strong>devotional worship (known as bhakti-yoga) of Radha and Krishna, and their many divine incarnations as the supreme forms of God, Svayam Bhagavan.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Most popularly,<\/strong> this worship takes the form of singing Radha and Krishna\u2019s holy names, such as \u201cHare\u201d, \u201cKrishna\u201d and \u201cRama\u201d, most commonly in the form of the Hare Krishna (mantra) also known as kirtan and dancing along with it.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Subramania Bharati<\/span><\/h3>\n<h5>News<\/h5>\n<p>Prime Minister has paid homage to Mahakavi Subramania Bharati on his 100th\u00a0Death Anniversary.<\/p>\n<h5>About\u00a0Subramania Bharati<\/h5>\n<p><strong>Subramania Bharati<\/strong>\u00a0was a poet, freedom fighter and social reformer from Tamil Nadu. He was known as\u00a0<strong><em>Mahakavi Bharathiyar\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>which means a great poet.<\/p>\n<p>His\u00a0songs on nationalism and freedom of India\u00a0helped to rally the masses to support the Indian Independence Movement in Tamil Nadu.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Examples:<\/strong><em>\u00a0\u201c<\/em><strong>Kannan Pattu<\/strong>\u201d \u201c<strong>Nilavum Vanminum Katrum<\/strong>\u201d \u201c<strong>Panchali Sabatham<\/strong>\u201d \u201c<strong>Kuyil Pattu<\/strong>\u201d\u00a0are examples of Bharathi\u2019s great poetic output. He also published the sensational \u201c<strong><em>Sudesa Geethangal<\/em><\/strong>\u201d in 1908.<\/p>\n<h5>Bharati as a Journalist<\/h5>\n<p>He began his career as a journalist and as a sub-editor in\u00a0<em>\u201c<strong>Swadesamitran<\/strong>\u201d<\/em>\u00a0in 1904.<\/p>\n<p>He\u00a0<strong>edited and\u00a0published<\/strong>\u00a0the weekly journal \u201c<strong><em>India\u201d<\/em><\/strong><em>,\u00a0<\/em>which was the first paper in Tamil Nadu to publish political cartoons.\u00a0He also published and edited a few other journals like \u201c<strong>Vijaya<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n<h5>Bharthi as a social reformer<\/h5>\n<p>Bharati was against the caste system. He declared that there were<strong>\u00a0only two castes<\/strong>-men and women and nothing more than that.<\/p>\n<p>He condemned certain Shastras that denigrate women. Furthermore, he believed in the\u00a0<strong>equality of humankind and criticised many preachers<\/strong>\u00a0for mixing their personal prejudices while teaching the Gita and the Vedas.<\/p>\n<p>He also\u00a0<strong>opposed child marriage, dowry and supported widow remarriage<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">King Shankar Shah<\/span><\/h3>\n<h5>News<\/h5>\n<p>Union Minister of Home Affairs has paid tributes to the great patriot King Shankar Shah and his son Kunwar Raghunath Shah in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh.<\/p>\n<h5>About King Shankar Shah<\/h5>\n<p>King Shankar Shah\u00a0was a\u00a0<strong>Gond king of Garha Kingdom<\/strong>\u00a0in the\u00a0<strong>Gondwana region of Madhya Pradesh<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Despite his state being under British rule during the first war of independence in 1857, the king and his son, Raghunath were saddened by the British era atrocities and\u00a0<strong>kept igniting the rebellion through their poetry<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>As the British officers learnt about their acts, the duo was arrested and sentenced to death and on September 18, 1858. They were tied to the mouth of the cannon and blown up.<\/p>\n<p>The locals in Jabalpur mark their\u00a0<strong>martyrdom day on September 18 every year<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">JP Narayan<\/span><\/h3>\n<h5>News<\/h5>\n<p>Recently\u00a0<strong>biography of JP\u00a0Narayan \u2013\u00a0The Dream of Revolution, authored by Bimal Prasad and Sujata Prasad<\/strong>,\u00a0was released. It\u00a0is an excellent\u00a0account\u00a0of his life, containing details about the various stages of his evolution.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>About JP Narayan<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>He was born on 11th October 1902 in Sitabdiara, Bihar. He is also known as \u201c<strong>Lok Nayak<\/strong>\u201d. People also affectionately called him\u00a0<strong>JP<\/strong>. He was a freedom fighter and one of the<strong>\u00a0pioneers of the socialist movement<\/strong>\u00a0in India. He was a man of great intellect and ethical values and standards.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Contributions of JP Narayan<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>He worked relentlessly for the poor and the underprivileged and became a symbol in the fight against corruption, anti-democratic conduct. He fought against the repressive practices of Indira Gandhi\u2019s government in the 1970s. Furthermore, he also created support for the\u00a0<strong>Bhoodan movement.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h5><strong>JP\u2019s evolution as a leader<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>JP\u2019s life can be studied under various phases. His formative years were the ones where he evolved as a political leader. He then turned to socialism. He also\u00a0<strong>waged a guerrilla struggle against the British in the Terai region of Nepal.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>However, his life had a\u00a0<strong>transition from socialism to Sarvodaya<\/strong>. This also led to the initiation of the\u00a0<strong>Total Revolution<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>About Total Revolution<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>It is a revolution against Indira Gandhi Regime, as she was found guilty of violating electoral laws by the Allahabad High Court. JP advocated a program of social transformation which he termed \u2018Sampoorna Kranti\u2019 (total revolution) in 1974 against corruption in public life.<\/p>\n<p>This resulted in the defeat of the Indira Gandhi government in 1977 and the\u00a0<strong>installation of the first-ever non-Congress government at the Centre.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What is so great was his stature, the position of Prime minister or President was within his reach, but he chose to work for the people at the grassroots level. This made him a true Lok Nayak.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Awards and recognitions<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Jayaprakash Narayan was posthumously conferred with India\u2019s highest civilian award, the\u00a0<strong>Bharat Ratna\u00a0<\/strong>in 1999.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Queen Heo Hwang-ok<\/span><\/h3>\n<h5>News<\/h5>\n<p>On\u00a0the banks of the Sarayu in Ayodhya, the Ram Katha Park has been renovated which will be renamed as Queen Heo Hwang-ok memorial park.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note<\/strong>: In 2019,\u00a0<strong>Department of Post<\/strong>\u00a0issued a set of\u00a0<strong>two postage stamps<\/strong>\u00a0to commemorate the bilateral relations between India and the Republic of Korea. The Stamp featured the portrait of Princess Suriratna (Queen Heo Hwang-ok).<\/p>\n<h5>About Queen Heo Hwang-ok<\/h5>\n<figure id=\"attachment_143824\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-143824\" style=\"width: 431px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-143824\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Queen-Heo-Hwang-ok.png?resize=431%2C475&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Princess Suriratna\" width=\"431\" height=\"475\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Queen-Heo-Hwang-ok.png?w=431&amp;ssl=1 431w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Queen-Heo-Hwang-ok.png?resize=272%2C300&amp;ssl=1 272w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 431px) 100vw, 431px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-143824\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: Mintageworld<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Queen Heo Hwang-ok was a Korean queen who is believed to have been born Princess Suriratna of Ayodhya, daughter of King Padmasen and Indumati.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong>\u00a0Padmasen ruled the ancient kingdom of Kausala (Kosala), a region that extended from present-day UP to Odisha.<\/p>\n<p>The queen\u2019s\u00a0story is described in\u00a0<strong>Samguk Yusa<\/strong>\u00a0(Memorabilia of Three Kingdoms). It is a 13th-century collection of legends, folktales and history of Korea\u2019s three kingdoms \u2014 Goguryeo, Baekje and Silla \u2014 and some other regions.<\/p>\n<h5>Queens Journey from India to Korea<\/h5>\n<p>In 48 BC, when Princess Heo or Suriratna was 16, she travelled to Korea from the ancient city of \u201c<strong>Ayuta<\/strong>\u2019 and<strong>\u00a0married Kim Suro<\/strong>, king of the south-eastern Korean state.<\/p>\n<p>She travelled by boat along with an entourage and was sent by her father, who is said to have had a dream about her marrying King Suro.<\/p>\n<h5>The debate about her Indian Origins<\/h5>\n<p>There is\u00a0some debate about her Indian origins as there are many versions of the same story.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Samguk Yusa<\/strong>\u00a0talks about the queen from a distant land named Ayuta and popular culture considers it Ayodhya. But Indian document or scripture has no record of her.<\/p>\n<p>Some historians also believe that the princess could actually be from\u00a0<strong>Thailand\u2019s Ayutthaya kingdom<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>But the kingdom in Thailand came about in 1350, years after Samguk Yusa had already been written.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Firoz Shah Tughlaq<\/span><\/h3>\n<h5>News<\/h5>\n<p>The Delhi government is about to renovate the 14th-century monument, Malcha Mahal, which was built in 1325 by the then Sultan Firoz Shah Tughlaq.<\/p>\n<h5>About Firoz Shah Tughlaq<\/h5>\n<p>Firoz Shah Tughlaq was born in 1309. He was the third ruler of the Tughlaq dynasty and ruled over Delhi from 1320 to 1412 AD. Firoz Shah Tughlaq was in power from 1351 to 1388 AD.<\/p>\n<p>The British called him the \u2018<strong>father of the irrigation department<\/strong>\u2019 because of the many gardens and canals that he built.<\/p>\n<h6>Taxes imposed under Firoz Shah Tughlaq<\/h6>\n<p><strong>Kharaj:<\/strong>\u00a0Land tax equal to one-tenth of the produce of the land.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Zakat:<\/strong>\u00a0two and a half per cent tax on property of\u00a0 Muslims<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kham<\/strong>: War Booty tax in which 1\/5th was the state\u2019s share and 4\/5th was given to soldiers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jaziya:<\/strong>\u00a0levied on the non-Muslim subjects, particularly the Hindus. Women and children were, however, exempted from the taxes.<\/p>\n<h6>Contributions<\/h6>\n<p>He established the\u00a0<strong>Diwan-i-Khairat<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 office for charity.<\/p>\n<p>He established the\u00a0<strong>Diwan-i-Bundagan\u00a0<\/strong>\u2014 department of slave.<\/p>\n<p>He made\u00a0<strong>Sarais (rest houses)<\/strong>\u00a0for the benefit of merchants and other travellers.<\/p>\n<p>Established four new towns,\u00a0<strong>Firozabad, Fatehabad, Jaunpur and Hissar.<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Guru Tegh Bahadur<\/span><\/h3>\n<h5>News<\/h5>\n<p>The Prime Minister will participate in the celebrations of the 400th Parkash Purab of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji at Red Fort in New Delhi.<\/p>\n<h5>About Guru Tegh Bahadur<\/h5>\n<p><strong>B<\/strong><strong>orn in: Amritsar\u00a0<\/strong>in 1621\u00a0to Mata Nanki and Guru Hargobind, the sixth Sikh guru.<\/p>\n<p>He was\u00a0the ninth of ten\u00a0Gurus\u00a0who founded the\u00a0Sikh religion. He was\u00a0often venerated as the\u00a0<strong>\u2018Protector of Humanity\u2019 (Srisht-di-Chadar)\u00a0<\/strong>by the Sikhs.<\/p>\n<p>He was a learned spiritual scholar and a poet whose 115 hymns are included in\u00a0<strong><em>Sri Guru Granth Sahib<\/em><\/strong><em>,<\/em>\u00a0the main text of Sikhism.<\/p>\n<p>He was also an avid traveller and played a key role in setting up preaching centers. During one such mission, he founded the town of\u00a0<strong>Chak-Nanki in Punjab,<\/strong>\u00a0which later became a part of Punjab\u2019s Anandpur Sahib.<\/p>\n<p>He sacrificed his life to protect religion and human values, ideals and principles in world history.\u00a0<strong>He was executed<\/strong>\u00a0for supporting the religious freedom of Kashmiri Pandits\u00a0<strong>on the orders of Mughal ruler Aurangzeb.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>His death anniversary is commemorated as\u00a0<strong>Shaheedi Divas<\/strong>\u00a0every year on 24 November.<\/p>\n<p>Sikh holy premises<strong>\u00a0Gurudwara Sis Ganj Sahib and Gurdwara Rakab Ganj Sahib\u00a0<\/strong>in Delhi mark the places of execution and cremation of Guru Tegh Bahadur.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dear Friends, This post is a part of our current affairs series for the UPSC IAS Prelims 2022.
